Red Lights are a Recommendation

Today alone, I've counted four cars driving through red lights. Not running past a yellow light. Red. Been red for a while. Only one stopped to see if any traffic was coming. Two had paper plates. The absolute and complete lack of police cars on the streets has officially turned Houston in to Mexico.

What a ****ing **** show Sylvester Turner, and all the other Democrats have turned the city into.

I'm stunned at how many people are looking down at their phone while driving.

~40% of people got their phone in their hand or looking down at it.

Might just be my part of town and regular routes out of town, but it seems like there's been a reduction in traffic enforcement since Covid.

Of course, they may be getting reassigned to priority calls with a rise in violent crime.

But yeah, some of the **** I see on neighborhood cut thru streets these days is mind blowing.

I ran two today, but not sure how that's Sly's fault.

One was actually in Manvel.

Damn

Usually it's someone bltching about cops pulling people over for traffic crimes and not out fighting real crime.

Now we WANT them to be out pulling over red light runners?

It was always bad up here in the Woodlands. I learned really fast to not just go as soon as the light turns green. Most often it occurs when you want to go straight after a left turn arrow from the opposite direction.

But I've noticed it's been even worse the last few months. Seems like every major intersection, you have to wait for 3-4 additional cars to run the red light before you can proceed. Very few patrol cars out, too.

I had never run a red light in my life until I moved to Houston. The cycles are nonsensically long; I don't remember it being like that anywhere else except Texas.

You really need to drive up to Plum Grove off Hwy 59 which is about 30 miles North of downtown Houston. It's a huge 100percent Spanish speaking community with no red lights. Big traffic circles were put in by the developer on some of the major roads. The action on those traffic circles during rush hour is something to see. Unbelievable unless you see it in person. All in Liberty County but right on the border of Harris and Monkey Counties.

People have learned that there are no consequences on the roads. When there's no consequences, why follow the rules? Just wait until the Christmas shopping madness.

It was a sad day when my kids got old enough to see me run a red and know what it meant. I've explained that "I was past the stop line when it changed" a lot. Usually preceded by a "F that, I'm not waiting another 5 minutes for this".

Outside of the empty Covid streets, I don't blatantly run and never a stale red. It is always a barely or not at all (over that stop line).

My wife's Uncle put it best after living in Houston in 1980s and moving back in 2018.

"When I lived in Houston during the early 80s i alwas though Houston was a sh*thole...after moving back i realize i was wrong...Houston is a lawless sh&thole"

Both are figurative. An invasion from Mexico and annexation of Houston would literally turn Houston into Mexico.

Really ratcheted up during Covid imo. To limit "putting police at risk" they basically adopted a policy of only pulling people over if they were just driving like absolute maniacs and putting people in immediate danger or in the commission of a major crime. Weren't concerned about traffic stops/DWI etc. Had an off duty cop at a bar tell me this...that they basically weren't pulling over or even arresting people unless it was something very serious. It's not still to that same degree, but I feel like there have been some lingering impacts. Drivers now in this city are noticeably worse and more brazen than ever before imo.

Slight tangent, but I miss when it was in fashion for the "brothers" to drive slow or "creep" down the street. Now with every rap song talking about SRT's, hellcats and trackhawks, it seems in style to just drive like a complete bat out of hell in your 5.7L Hemi or other souped up car...with paper plates and zero regard for other human life or any road etiquette whatsoever.

Asians and drunk Mexicans are no longer the worst drivers imo.

If y'all want to see cops pulling over folks for slight infractions, Matt Davis, previously popped for overtime fraud around traffic tickets going to court, runs a speed trap on TC Jester downhill bridge daily.

Wife knows to ride her brakes but she got a ticket for no front plate.

I have also noticed this, but don't think it's just limited to our invaders from the south. No one stops at a red light and everyone is on their phone.

People complained about speed traps checks, but I have no problem with either itt.. We take for granted how dangerous driving is. Need much more law enforcement.

There should be more blinking red lights. Annoying as F when there is no one around and you are at a red light.

That division has always been the absolute worst in town for traffic court whoring. I've had so many BS stops around there - two by 2 different Aggies, 2 by a different guy who later made news for being part of an overtime ticket scam.

I have no idea why so much manpower goes to that division and their overtime scams, when we could actually use a little enforcement in other parts of town where thugs (of varied ethnicities) just go flying thru school zones weaving in and out of traffic menacing citizens.

It's bad in MO city as well. Light turns green, still waiting for 4 to 5 cars to come through before you can go. Rarely I am at the front but if I am and it's the opposite side left turn lanes, I just lay on the horn and creep into the intersection to at least make them feel shame.

I grew up learning to drive in Houston in the 80's.

It was the exact same way then.

This morning on the way to work I stopped at a school bus headed the opposite direction that had red flashing lights and that little stop sign on the driver side popped out.

Two cars went passed it without even slowing.

College Station is way worse about red light runners. I have seen multiple cops pulling people over around yale/washington intersection. Think it was 4 tickets being handed out over 2 days.

Uh, who said "a few years ago"? I worked for ICE doing deportations. Its a bipartisan failure that's been going on at least since 1972, compounded by Reagan's amnesty and IRCA/NACARA, accelerated in the 90's, and then hit exponential numbers over the past decade. But there's no mistaking which way it's trending and who has been encouraging it. /soapbox

Nothing is being done about the thousands of illegal paper plates. Traffic violations are not a concern except for the easy tickets that generate revenue.

Leaders don't care - they don't drive

If SJL had to drive instead of ride in her Suburban with a driver and security detail from River Oaks to her actual district for example she might complain to Turner.
