Let's get a 6 month headstart on the usual questions. If any of you are thinking of volunteering for 2023, this looks like a good chance to learn more:
https://www.rodeohouston.com/Events/Event-Details/ArtMID/11786/ArticleID/3029/Aug-8-Committee-Showcase

Quote:

If you want to volunteer at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, stop by the Committee Showcase to meet with current volunteers and learn about the different Rodeo committees with volunteer opportunities.

  • Event: Committee Showcase
  • Hosted By: Membership Committee
  • Date: Aug. 20, 2022
  • Time: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Location: NRG Center, second floor 300 serie

In hindsight, I wish I had attended something like this and taken time to learn more about the various committees and different ways of volunteering. When I got started, I really had no clue how much work is done by volunteers, and how many opportunities there were. So if any of yall are thinking about getting involved, I'd encourage you to check it out and learn what the various volunteer committees do, and ask questions about their expectations of volunteers.

I'm gone half the year for work. Would that preclude my involvement in a committee?

Not necessarily, unless that requires you to be gone for the three weeks in February and March.

Some working committees don't require volunteers to do anything outside of those weeks. Some committees finish most of their work before the rodeo even starts. I don't know which if any committees have year-round requirements.

If anyone tries to hoodwi - persuade yall to join a working committee (such as Rodeo Express, Transportation, any of the others that work on the ground throughout the rodeo), be sure to ask specifics about shift schedules and expectations. If a committee leader is desperate for new members, there's probably a reason.

Every year it is different and some years I could be gone the entire time during the rodeo and sometimes I may be home the whole time, but it is safe to assume I will always miss SOME time during the rodeo.

Your local go Texan committee could work. They put on events like chili cookoffs through the year.

There are 5 Jr Market sales committees, School Art, Poultry, Steer, Swine & Lamb & Goat. Each has a minimum amount you raise by selling auction commitment & meat packages to earn your badge. The only other requirement is to work the auction, but we always have people who miss auction day for various reasons.

I will be there on the 20th, should be a good event.

And if there is a specific committee you are interested in, just ask, good chance there is someone on here is on it, or knows someone who is.

Your lack of drinking precludes your investment in a committee.

Ok, I will try to be there if I am off of work. I have a new job with a much more forgiving schedule so my wife and I would like to be more involved in the community. If we are going to make it I will reach out to you before hand so we can say hello.

I'm recruiting for the Transportation Committee cool team. We serve lunch/dinner to the committee members that are out there working their shifts. First round of interviews are the 16th!

Lots of good ags on the Breeder's Greeters committee. Fun group but definitely need to know some people either in real life or meet at the happy hours to get on. Going into my 4th year here.

Great event for leaning about committees. I'm normally there for Special Childrens, but in college station for FOW review. My godson got into my old outfit.

Hope everyone found something, but if you missed it we are still recruiting for the transportation committee cool team! Let me know and I can get you the hook up.
Next interviews are 9/22.
