Even if you don't have kids in HISD schools but live in the area it's so important to clean up the current board so decisions they make allow kids to grow up to be productive members of society. And just as important clean up HISD from the money sucker and political force it has become.
This guy Lee "Mac" Walker is one of my best friends from the mean streets of Sharpstown. He will keep the board and HISD accountable. They already tried to negate his campaign by "accidentally" listing his name incorrectly on the ballot - put his first name Lee on instead of his middle name Mac which he filled out all of the paperwork to do correctly.
Great guy, super smart, very conservative and will speak his mind. Chronicle endorsed him - don't hold that against him! Did so from a fiscal perspective because incumbent is incompetent.
Thanks!

I'll vote for him, but what are his odds, 1 in a million or 1 in a billion?

I was probably going to vote for Bridget Wade. Too bad Mac and Bridget are vying for the same seat. They could both do some good it looks like to the current status quo.

If anyone cares, here are the candidates endorsed by the Harris County Republican Party, though the link doesn't have any information about the individual candidates (maybe somewhere else on the site):

I'd probably want to go with the most viable challenger to any incumbent.

Also, look for your sample ballot here: https://harrisvotes.org/SampleBallots?lang=en-US

Are MAC and Bridget going to split the R votes allowing a lib to win? Who has the better chance between the two, as that's who I want to vote for

I would like to know who has the best chance too. The current one lives in the area so half my neighbors just put her sign up because she's "local". Looking to put up an alternative.

Dems were not putting a lot of money in the race because they did not fear Bridget Wade or her opponents and figured their incumbent would have an easy re-election. Lee "Mac" Walker got in the race a little later which caused him to miss out on some of the earlier R endorsements but has the Dem incumbent scared, based on them scrambling and spending late money. He did exceptionally well at the late August candidate forum, received the Houstonians for Great Public Schools endorsement (they hosted the forum) and a lot of free pub from the ballot name mix up. Very conservative, and not one to let career education bureaucrats get what they want.

Josh Rosales was hanging out at an intersection near my kid's elementary school last week, saying hi and passing out cards to people. I took a card and happily chatted with him for a minute or so, then saw a flaming lib lady shake her head no at him and walk off. So, I'm voting for him.

I totally support your friend and what they stand for.

But HISD isn't getting overturned unless there was a huge monied campaign to apply pressure and flip seats. And HISD is in the predicament they are in because of city hall above it. All bad contracts flow up to city hall.

The deck is just stacked too heavily against those who want educational change. All inner city school districts in the US are just minor kleptocracies funneling cash up to the politicians above them.

Who's the best option for District VI? Not voting for the incumbent, so either Baker or Degeyter.
District VI
Kendall Baker
Holly Flynn Vilaseca
Greg Degeyter

Went and voted. Voted for Mac in the end. I won't do public schools in Houston, but will do my part as a taxpayer and try to get the commies out of office.

I remember his name from when he was a district judge, appointed by Governor W. I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk about him running for school board; maybe he just threw his hat in the ring without campaigning? Dunno. He's got a ton of experience and I'm sure he'd be lightyears better than the incumbent, but you don't want to split up challenger votes too much.

This guy running for IX looks awesome:
https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Activist-sues-HISD-after-being-banned-from-13941849.php

Quote:

Gerry Monroe, an outspoken fixture in the district for the past several years, said district officials illegally banned him from district property in April, stemming from two incidents within three days. In one, during the public comment portion of a board of trustees meeting, Monroe wore a T-shirt bearing a middle school principal's face and, at times, a white bandanna over his mouth, while loudly demanding the district remove the principal from the school: "Either you take her out, or I'm going to take her out." In the second incident, HISD officials alleged Monroe banged on a table, cursed at staff and threatened to ruin the career of an employee during a private meeting.

The shrews on our school's Facebook page absolutely hate him, which makes me like him. Unfortunately, I just found out I'm not actually in that district, so I can't vote for him or Josh Rosales. Guess it's whoever is running against Diegaard.

The Conservative choice for District V is Caroline Walter. I will be voting for her today.

My experience with him when he was on the bench is that he is solid. I believe he played football at Texas. He would likely have a short fuse with BS and whining that may arise from other school board members.

You are correct about playing at Texas. I used to interact with him when he was on the board at METRO and only had positive experiences.

I'm with the laughing .gifs. More people work for HISD (or accept lucrative contracts from their buddies that do) than care about whether they do a diggity damned thing to educate kids. What's the best urban school district in America?

Anyone have personal connections or recommendations on the District 1 candidates? What I gathered from 5 minutes on their websites:

  • Matias Kopinsky - teasip with little substance on website; maybe the least terrible?
  • Janette Garza Lindner - seems per primary focus is equality and closing the racial "equity gap"
  • Elizabeth Santos - wants to spend school money improving access to doctors, nutrition, and housing???

Record turnout at the polling location adjacent to my office. Current wait 40min. Usually zip in and out on Election Day.

ETA- if masking is any indication, it's a record turnout of lemmings.
The story isn't that [DeSantis] "couldn't win" the primary. The story is that an overwhelming majority of our population is heinously stupid. 50% of them vote for communists. 75% of the remaining 50% vote for Trump, who cant win. When the majority of the opposition party insists on voting for an opposition candidate who can't win, you get exactly the government you deserve. - Well Endowed Ag

In District VII, which serves Sinclair Elementary in the Timbergrove neighborhood, challenger Bridget Wade was the leading vote-getter with 40.9 percent of the 13,206 votes cast. The incumbent Sung was second with 36.4 percent of the vote, and they likely will compete for the seat in a runoff.

The two other District VII challengers, Lee "Mac" Walker and Dwight Jefferson, received 19.9 percent and 2.8 percent of the vote, respectively.

I voted for Mac but will settle for Bridget. I'm not surprised there's a runoff, but am surprised a challenger is the favorite going in.

Looks like the Aldine superintendent who is serving as the president of the National School Boards Association and who signed the controversial letter to the DOJ might be headed to runoff.

I figured Mac and Bridget would split the conservative vote. Glad at least one of them will make it through to a runoff. We just need to remember to vote in runoff!

Early voting is open. School Board runoffs on ballot. Runoff election day is December 11. A couple of chances to upset the status quo.
