Hou BBQ put out a new BBQ guide for Houston. You can filter by styles, parking, etc. They don't have rankings, but it seems like more of a "if it's on here, it's legit" type of list. Pretty interesting. Seems like it will be useful. I've heard of most of these places, but there's a couple listed I haven't and now want to try.

What are y'all's thoughts? Did they miss anything? Any place on here that shouldn't be? My only thought is Goode Co. doesn't belong with some of these places, but it is "historic" I guess.

I don't see my backyard anywhere on there.

Missing Virgie's. It was in Texas Monthly a few years ago and still good stuff.
I was in the room here one day... watchin' the Mexican channel on TV. I don't know nothin' about Pele. I'm watchin' what this guy can do with a ball and his feet. Next thing I know, he jumps in the air and flips into a somersault and kicks the ball in - upside down and backwards... the dang (sc) goalie never knew what the hell hit him. Pele gets excited and he rips off his jersey and starts running around the stadium waving it around his head. Everybody's screaming in Spanish. I'

What are they trying to get out of this? They squeezing money out of the bbq joints to get on their list, or going to after enough clicks? They trying to suck up to the pit guys? Fanboys only?

Too bad you can't sort the list by "good."

Who Created this Guide?

The Houston BBQ Guide is brought to you by the same good people who bring you the Houston Barbecue Festival. The primary contributor and designer is festival co-founder and Houston Chronicle barbecue columnist J.C. Reid.

Good stuff - the map is dandy, too. Can we please not have 1-2 pages of 'backyard' comments? We get it, you're a badass

RE Harlem Road BBQ: Do not go. It's dry, sides are bland. Surprised it made the list, but just doing my part

Maybe I have a different perspective than some of y'all but I find it pretty crazy that just about 10 years ago the top BBQ offerings in Houston were generally thought to be Luling's on Richmond and Goode Company. I don't believe Killen's or Corkscrew or the like were around then. Virgie's and Burn's were around but really hadn't been discovered by the masses. Barbecue Inn and Hickory Hollow were pretty long-standing but marginal BBQ IIRC. There was also a place on Memorial just east of the park near the old Biba's Greek joint but it's a strip center now.

Anyway, there's a pretty amazing number of great BBQ joints here now.

Southern Q on Richey is good. Their sides are really good.

Lone Star Sausage company on Walters is just what the name says. Sausage there is great.

There's a new Aggie owned place in the center with Gianna's in Tomball the name of which I can't think of but it's really good too.

I agree with you - Houston BBQ seems to have had quite a rejuvenation the last several years.

Otto's? The place that George HW Bush was fond of?

Don't forget Thelma's and her twin sister, Velma, using one of Houston's oldest pits over on East side of Downtown at Live Oak and St. Emanuel. Outstanding.

Yup. The place "burned down"and they moved to Scott and OST. The land became too valuable in Eado. She had a great run but the loss of the historical pit was the big tragedy.

Yup, it was Otto's.

They had pics of Bush 41 up all over the place.

Don't think so. Age may have caught up. Her last place that I know of was at Scott and Southmore past Frenchy's at the Cougar High football stadium.

Her ribs and In and Out charred brisket were tasty.

That list is really let down by Goode Co. and Pizzitola's. Both are barely palatable.

sounds like the whole idea of the list is to have a variety of restaurants. Some where you'll willingly wait for an hour in line and some that serve consistently mediocre BBQ. There's a place for both, clearly.

Burn's BBQ is legit. We use to visit there when we lived in Garden Oaks.
