Where would you stay in downtown Houston for 2 nights?

Option 1: Cost is no object
Option 2: You need to pinch pennies
Option 3: Middle of the road

Depends on if you mean actual downtown or what suburbanites call downtown (anything inside or near 610).

This, because if cost is no object, I'm going to The Post Oak.

Damn - didn't mean to touch such a nerve. It's a legit question.

For downtown downtown, the Four Seasons is hard to beat if price doesn't matter. Kind of depends on what you're looking for and what you're there for though. .

If you're really pinching pennies the 59 underpass looks like the place to be.

For inside the 59/45/10 triangle:

1. Four Seasons, JW Marriott, Marriott Marquis
2. Holiday Inn Express behind Toyota Center
3. Hampton Inn by Discovery Green/Ballpark, Hyatt (check Hotwire for the curiously cheap 4*)

RIP Montagu Hotel.

I've found the best way to find good deals on hotels downtown is Google maps. Make sure you input the dates you are looking for when searching. It will give you prices of various sites, sometimes hotels.com has the lowest, sometimes Orbitz, sometimes the hotel itself has the best deal. Also if you have a membership with Google One it can sometimes get you even cheaper deals. Like right now, with Google One membership via their Last Minute Travel connection, I can get Hilton Americas next weekend for $110 a night. On slow weekends I've gotten the Marquis Downtown for around $120.

Option 3: Lancaster, Magnolia, Icon

All were really cool and reasonable.

We recently stayed in the Hyatt Regency Galleria on points in the Regency Suite. The redemption rate was crazy low and the room was amazing. Just tossing that idea out there.

Serious answer: current winner for nicest hotel in Houston is the Post Oak in uptown. If money is no object, stay there and uber downtown as needed.

Actual downtown: JW Marriott or Four Seasons are the best properties depending on which one has been renovated more recently and which points system you prefer.

Mid range, you can usually get the Hilton Americas, Hyatt Regency, or Le Meridian pretty cheap if no conventions are in town. Qatar Airways flight crews stay at Le Meridian and the girls are easy on the eyes. The rooftop bar there is seriously cool. Hyatt Regency has the highest hooker capacity of all hotels in Houston.

Cheap: the Holiday Inn by Toyota Center, Marriott Courtyard by HPD headquarters, or Hampton Inn near ballpark.

Free: tent village under 59 bounded by Chartres, Ruiz, and Hamilton St. or homeless colony along Caroline Street under I-45. At the first place, you will get shanked. Tony Buzbee recently stayed at the second place. During the freeze, I drove by and spotted the more industrious denizens of that community warming themselves over a shipping palate they set on fire.

Those pics bring back such fond memories of not swimming in the Westbury pool as a youngster.
