Anyone have a UV light to kill mold etc from your A/C?

Daughter is supposedly allergic to mold and I was curious is the UV light would work or is just snake oil to make the AC company money?

Thanks.

We have it. No idea if it has really made a difference or not.

Post over in the home improvement board...several HVAC guys post there regularly.

Yes it works, what you have to know and most installers don't tell you is the bulb has to be changed very often to maintain its effectiveness.

How often is very often

On my fish tank, it was every 3 to 4 months for maximum effectiveness.

Maybe as long as 6 months.

Realize different system, but same principle.

These are a great option and a peace of mind. We sell the Reme Halo for $695 with Tune Up (we get them for ~$400 and get very few per week). the Reme Halo LED's are crazy backordered. Ebay or Amazon if you are a DIY person.

Many HVAC companies charge ~$1,400 for these, but few really sell many... and it's like a 15 min install

We have a good relationship with RGF and they like are videos which give a good breakdown to hopefully answer questions.

Installed one 5 or 6 years ago, every time I'm in the attic i look at the bracket and see the glow and think it's working. Had no idea these stop emitting uv eventually. Guess i need to get a fresh bulb. Believe i got one that was like $120 on Amazon. Maybe it never emitted uv to start with.

No idea whether it did any good

Another aspect is uv destroys materials pretty well; think stuff outside in the sun.

If the air handler in the attic is not metal, the UV can damage materials and cause premature failure. Coils would be fine, but the insulation and duct work.

UV bulbs degrade over time, just like the overhead light bulbs in projectors. When it is old, it is putting out light, but not enough to do enough, like killing or scrambling DNA of living things.

Not my graphic, but essentially the overall idea.

Hospitals have been putting these in their AC system for at least 2 decades now. They work but you have to change the bulb

Got them. Made a difference for sure. Smell is 100% better than when we bought the place 1 year ago.

UV-C does not treat the air stream. It wii irradiate the coils and drain pan. May want to consider bi polar ionization instead, as it is less invasive device that can be easily installed and are designed to treat the air stream, not just the surfaces.
