We got flooded last year by Harvey, but had insurance and I'm gainfully employed so we have recovered. My wife and I talked about donating some money for the flood/hurricane victims of this year's disasters, but don't know which organization would truly put the money towards helping people who really need it.

Frankly, the large number of charities who consume most of the money they take in themselves keeps me from wanting to donate except for cases where I know people personally.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Southern Baptists

I know this is a good one. They didn't help us directly, but my local church did. The tremendous amount of volunteer hours by locals helps assure that the money you give is well-spent.

The cases of things like that are not as frequent as many typically believe. But for any org you are curious about check out their Functional Allocation of Expenses to see the percentage given to mission vs admin. Info is also available on their 990.

As a benchmark, anything over 70% is pretty good.

First Baptist has a Men Serve program that monthly provides home repairs/chores for widows in the community. In the wake of Harvey, they opened the program up to both sexes and to all Harvey victims. For a few days there were over 250 volunteers and 40+ sites. We ran crews nonstop for a couple of weeks, until the mold hazard was too high. They also hosted/served out of town first responders.
