Wife and I are looking to "get away" for our anniversary and plan on spending a night or two at a Houston hotel. Location in the city isn't an issue.

What would be our best option? From quick research it looks like the Marriot Marquis, Hotel Icon, Hotel ZaZa, JW Marriott, and Hotel Granduca have good reviews.

ZaZa in the museum district is nice. It's a completely different vibe than their Memorial City location. You have lots of things to do in walking distance, or uber from there. I'd figure out what part of town you want to be in, or is close to the bars/restaurants you want to check out.

We did Granduca and loved it as it has a strong European feel. Easy walking to Uptown park.
Zara has easy access to museums and you can easily take train to downtown, etc. Can get rowdy there.

The Houstonian might work for you too, but all the previous suggestions are good.

I'd plan what else I'm doing and pick somewhere that minimizes travel time, but if you're looking for something nice, all of the options will be either downtown, galleria or medical center areas, and those aren't that far apart in the great scheme of things.

We did Hotel Sorella in CityCentre for one anniversary. They had a package that included room, champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, and voucher for dinner at their restaurant. LOVED it!

Nice to be able to walk around to the bars, Tasting Room, Ra, Season 52, etc..

If downtown, I'd go for the JW. Marriott marquis is cool because of the pool but it's a pure convention center hotel and feels like it.

Granduca is a great property.

Really just depends on preferred location after that.

We've like The Magnolia for Wedding/Honeymoon and a couple of "staycation" get aways, but it probably needs an updating.

Not sure if it's the most romantic - but the new Post Oak is probably the highest end/most luxurious (and probably the most expensive). It's in line to receive a Forbes Five Star rating, which no other hotel in Houston currently has.

So early in my career I got roped into some event planning in Houston. I am not an event planner!

Anyhow I got to see several hotels and use their various services. I for a vacation I would choose one of the boutique hotels as they typically cater more to the individual. The JW Marriott is large and very corporate while some place like the Granduca is smaller and more intimate. The Granduca used to offer a free car service you could ask about ahead of time for dinner reservations, shopping ect. This was before Uber was big so not sure if they still offer it. Also generally the worst room in a boutique is still going to be really nice with nice finishes. In a larger corporate hotel it's just going to be a hotel room that could be the same anywhere in the world.

I second this. Stayed here our wedding night before leaving the country. Floor is probably still sticky. You have my apologies.

Also - don't use the ice bucket

Thank you guys for your input. After talking with the wife, looks like we're between Zaza (that's where we stayed the night of our wedding before flying out) and St. Regis (she really wants to do their "tea lunch")

Don't stay at Magnolia. Wife and I did it recently, and to say that place needs "updating" is quite the understatement.

ZaZa is a good call or the new Tillman hotel that is a monument to excess.

Wife did the tea lunch and loved it. Get ready b/c it's expensive.

Wife and I spent our wedding night in the Sam Houston hotel downtown. Can't recommend it enough... the rooms are immaculate, and each one is a little bit different which gives it a nice romantic feeling.

Only knock against the Sam Houston hotel is the church run soup kitchen/homeless outreach place across the street. If you don't mind a higher than average (for downtown) concentration of stinky pandhandlers, then disregard.

Stay at the Post Oak Hotel. Tillman needs to pay his contractors.
