I used to love Cafe Miami in Bellaire, but it closed. I've been looking for a new go-to place and found El Rincon Criollo.

It's on Hwy 6, just north of Westheimer. The food was fantastic. I would especially recommend the Ropa Vieja and the Pierna Asada de Puerco con Cebolla (Pernil).

For Cuban, Cafe Piquet in Bellaire is pretty damn good.

El Rey.

I say that in part because it's the only Cuban restaurant I know, but I also like the food.

Yeah, they're okay. Not al all convenient to us, though. Not close to home or work.

We live on the west side of town, so El Rincon Criollo is much better.

I've been to Flor de Cuba; I like Rincon better. It could be the menu selections I made happened to be better at Ricon.

thought you were asking for suggestions. Maybe brush up on your punctuation usage.

Rincon wasn't bad but if I remember correctly, flor and Piquet both had their own bakeries or made their bread and pastries in house and Rincon didn't and that's key to me with Cuban good since their breads and pastries are a bit unique vs. other Latin foods.

You may be 100% correct on this. I did take out and didn't get any baked items with the meal.

Has anyone tried this place at Willowbrook? I've driven by it, but it looks a little roachy.

My wife and I hit it up one day. We both thought it was excellent. We had recently returned from Punta Cana and wanted to check out Houstons offerings. It was much better than anything we had at our resort, even if it is a bit roachey.

For Puerto Rican food, the food at tex-chick is always good but doesnt taste super authentic to me. I dont think the owner is puerto rican. Theres a puerto rican food truck on westheimer called Senor Juan thats gotten great reviews. I havent eaten there but I stopped by to check out the food and it looked good and authentic. The owners are straight from the island. Might be worth checking out.

I have! The day I went, I wanted alcapuriras but he'd sold out. I got empanadas, which were okay. I liked what I got. And it came without food poisoning

Rice and Beans is not bad and the closest to us, so it's where we normally go. I've yet to find good Cuban bread in Houston though, will have to try Flor de Cuba before they sell out.

For Cuban - I like El Meson in the Village. It's nothing special, but I always enjoy my meal.

I can't recall the name and I've never been but I've heard there's some tiny, hole-in-the-wall joint in Montrose that has the absolute best Puerto Rican food in the city.

Anybody know the name?

edit: Never mind, looks like it's Tex-Chick.

I don't know if that's it, but my mom took me to a place located in an old house in that area. It's been a very long time and I don't recall the food. May need to try it again.

La Vina on Richmond, in the same shopping center as several Colombian restaurants is interesting. Kind of a dumpy looking place, but the older gentleman waiter has been a waiter for decades in Houston Cuban restaurants. Food is pretty standard fare however.

Agree with OP. That place is delicious and always packed at peek hours.

There are a few Cuban trucks popping up around SW. I haven't tried the one Gessner and Harwin yet.
