The 59N/GP (going North) exchange seems as high as the I10 one.

All of the I10 interchanges are the same height, whoch you can find on citydata. The 59 interchanged mentionrd above is over 60 feet higher than any other in houston.

you're saying the 59N/99 interchange is 175ft tall? because a google search says that I-10W/BW8 interchange is 115ft and was the 2nd-tallest in US as of 2010.

Thank god you saved me the trouble of searching for this piece of obscure data.

The tallest HIGH mast Light pole that TxDOT has in the State of Texas is 175'. I can guarantee you that the the ones at IH 10 and US 290 at the GP are 175'. I designed and signed and sealed the lighting drawings at IH 10 @ the GP and reviewed and approved the ones at US 290 @ the GP. I think TxDOT used 175' poles all along IH 10 from IH 610 to Katy when they widened it a while back.

I reviewed the remainder of the GP including the SH 249, IH 45, Hardy, and US 59 interchange lighting and none of them used high mast in excess of 175'.

I no longer work with the guy that managed these interchange designs or I would ask him and get a definite answer.

I can confirm that the high mast poles at the Hardy/GP interchange are 175'.

So...why do we build them so tall? I've always been curious of this. The construction costs have to be massive compared to building them at a more moderate height like most states outside of Texas do.

Other states don't have the widest highway in the world.

Height and spacing is a function of lanes that need to be illuminated. It's cheaper to go taller vs. more lights at shorter spacing.

I'd imagine the lack of severe winter here also makes it more feasible for us to build taller than other states.

There are the cases where we have 1 fly-over for 1 road (99 crossing 290, for example). I'm guessing the height of the 99 flyover is for future expansion, but you cannot tell me the height of that flyover was for minimum clearance of 290.

Why do we go so high on interchanges in Texas?

Bw8 EB to 45 N NB seems pretty high- higher than 59. It's probably one of the Grand Parkway direct connectors though because they cross several levels and there aren't any below grade crossings like at beltway and i-10.

I drove this on a motorcycle once. Scary as sheeeeet.

Meant to include that there is no way that these bridges are 175' above grade.

The 115' to 120' number should be correct.

That is a minor consideration but good point

The design of that connector absolutely is based on the future connectors.

If you are familiar with the IH 10W @ GP, they built the W-S connector and it was sort of hanging out there for a while. Surprisingly the other connectors were built in short order when the GP was built between IH 10 and US 290.
