How long do you want to ignore this user?
Anyone know of a good boxing gym in and around the Bellaire/Galleria area? Some place that would take a beginner and teach me the ends and outs. Really looking to train and get in shape, sick of the everyday "weights" or "run" routine.

TIA

That's where I would go. Lou is a genuinely nice guy and definitely not someone I'd want to box.

Urban Jungle in the Heights is good but it's Thai kickboxing and jui jitsu. Some guys I know from there have gone to Lou Savarese' gym and Main Street Gym (I think) and like it.

I've heard at boxing gyms the sparring is a different experience (as in you'll get your ask kicked if you're not good) but at Urban Jungle people are cool and won't go hard on new guys. Well unless the new guy is throwing bombs.

If you want straight boxing, Lou's is a good spot. If you are looking to incorporate kicks, knees, etc then you should find an mma gym. There are tons...As someone already stated urban jungle, Revolution, 4oz, Metro Fight Club, Houston Muay Thai, Kru Pong, etc..

Does Lee Canalito still have his boxing gym downtown? He was in the movie Paradise Alley with Sylvester Stallone in 1970's.

Yep, appears so:

Lee Canalito is a native Houstonian. He was a star defensive lineman for the University of Houston , progressing to an amateur and professional heavyweight boxing career. Lee was trained by Angelo Dundee in Miami , managed by Sylvester Stallone, and ranked 9th in the world in 1985. All but one of his fights were won by knockout.

Lee began training individuals for fitness in Los Angeles in the late 80's, where he starred in several motion pictures (including Stallone's Paradise Alley). He eventually returned to Houston and has been training private clients, amateurs, and professional fighters ever since.

Lee also provided inner-city HISD elementary, junior high, and high schools with after-school boxing and fitness programs for several years

Not just straight boxing, but I train at Elite MMA. They have a Greenway location that is 5 minutes from Bellaire/Galleria.
