Qusestion on the pricing on powertochoose, so they are showing a rate of lets say, $.044 per kwh for 1000 to +2000 kwh, but less than 1000 it is $.13 and 2000 kwh+ is $.08. I haven't paid much attention is the past, but I am assuming that I will be charged $.08 till I hit 1000 kwh, then $.044 between 1000 and 2000, and $.13 at 2000+. Let me know if I am correct on that assumption, trying to pick a new provider and I have generally left it up to my wife in the past.

it really depends. but, a lot of times it is fee related not graduated.

You have to look at the rate sheets on all of them. On some, you pay a fee if you don't use x number of kW, on others, you pay a fee if you go over x number of kW.

And you have to really look close because some have gotten sneaky because they know exactly how the rates are displayed on powertochoose and manipulate their rates to look more attractive on the site than they actually are...

I guess that's what's confusing to me, that is why I put that scenario out there, didn't make sense.

Yep. Some will have the price per kWh for 500 and 1000 on the fact sheet as they all do but the price increases dramatically over 1000 kWh but that is not that evident when you are scanning them.

the rates listed are average rates for the specific 500, 1000 and 2000 usage amounts and not a rate for the bracketed range. Some offer a credit if you use between 999 and 2001. That makes the 1000 and 2000 looks low and could be a good deal if that is where you fall, but go above 2001 you loose the credit and I've seem the rates go to $0.13/KW and higher. be sure and read the rate sheet link.

I found the following link to be helpful for actual bill costs. This is hosted through Centerpoint, and they can compare your old monthly bills to what a new plan offers.

Good luck!

Good point wessimo - I noticed that as well. Hopefully between powertochoose and this one, people can try to get a good estimate on costs.

Yes they are. However even if you don't use their site for a new provider it still is very informative as how these companies tier their rates. I found one for just over 8 cents with no fees. Based on weekly usage I should be at $225-240 each summer month rather than $280-340 in previous summers with Bounce.

Switched over to StarTex Energy last month. Just got my first bill and it works out to 6.52 cents/Kwh! Heck of a deal compared to what Reliant used to charge us...

It is amazing the variety of plans that are now available. We get a credit when we go over 2,000 Kwh in a month which drops our pricing down to that 6.5 level. My daughter on the other hand, has a plan that provides a credit if she does NOT go over 1,000 kwh.

I agree. I have an effective rate just over 5 cents because I found a plan with half price nights and weekends. My power usage is almost 0 when I'm at work. The AC and pool are on timers and run all night when power is cheap. For my specific situation, it cut my bill in half.
