Are there any local stores in greater Houston (within 100 miles) with a large selection of reclaimed wood?
I'm looking to make furniture out of it and possible a fireplace mantle.

Yes. I have googled that in the past and there are several choices.

Try the Historic Houston salvage warehouse on National. They are normally open for a few hours each Saturday.

I saw the Historic Houston website and thought about checking it out.

I also googled several places but it is hard to tell what the actual selection might be. I was hoping for some input on which have the best quality and selection.

Historic Houston is hit or miss, and it depends specifically on what you are looking for. You can also call some of the big demo companies like Cherry and see if they might allow you to do some salvage before they take an old house down.

In fairness, because it is reclaimed, the quantity and selection varies widely from month to month. I haven't bought wood since last year so it would have no relation to what they have now. I just called around until I found what I was looking for.

Not sure if it's technically reclaimed wood but Houston Hardwoods sells a bunch of specialty wood. May be worth looking into.

There's a guy who lives/works in the warehouse behind the Boil House on 11th that has a lot of reclaimed barn wood. Very nice guy, easy to work with, etc. I'll look for his info.

Warrington show should be opening up this weekend. Some folks will bring old barn wood from like Missouri etc. It is not cheap but available and you need to bargain.

Id highly recommend Raul Juarez at M&M Lumber Company. They have a lot of reclaimed wood on their yard in South Houston. We bought a fireplace mantle from him a couple years ago that came from an early 1800s barn in Pennsylvania. Turned out awesome for the rustic look we were going for. He spent a bunch of time with us sorting through beams to find the mantle that was exactly what we wanted. He was also gracious enough to provided pics and the newspaper article about the barn tear down to us so that we know the history of what's in our home.

I have used Waynes Barnwood. He has a variety of wood, but it will all depend on where hes been lately. Be sure to call ahead to see if hes there, and go when you have a little bit of extra time to talk and look around.

sorta on topic - the old Shudde Brothers hat shop next to Knapp Chevy was torn down a year or so ago. I went by there one day when they were tearing it down & the foreman told me that Mattress Mack was buying all the old reclaimed wood & that it was to be made into furniture for his store.
A shame to see that old building go.
