This thread got me thinking....Where can I get infant swim lessons? JV/northwest Houston TIA.

Tried to Google info from within TexAgs and got this. They mentioned private instructors and I know that one of SwimJim's better instructors (for all children's age groups) went back to college after a long break and is a nanny for this nanny service but probably does private swim lessons on the side.

Here are some others from personal experience:

  • SwimJim - on Wilcrest just north of Briar Forest near Westside Tennis & Fitness - open weekdays as well as on weekends - take children as young 2-3 months
  • Houston Swim Club - three locations - Katy, Sharpstown, Sugarland, Pearland
  • YMCA (Langham Crk or Clay Rd)
  • CyFair Swim Club (Fleet) - seems to be geared more toward youth competitive swimming
  • Dad's Club also has swim lessons but seems to be similar to CyFair Swim Club

I have had my kids at SwimJim and YMCA and prefer SwimJim. YMCA Clay Rd does not seem to be as consistent with the type/quality of instruction and seems to have more turn over than SwimJim.

SwimJim consistently makes available and fills various level classes for children and does have some instructor turn over but the quality and consistency has not suffered that I have noticed.

The wife took our then 1 yo to Houston Swim Club last summer for lessons. She liked the instruction there. This year she's pregnant and wasn't going to get in a swimsuit around "all those skinny *****es" so she got a private instructor from that swim club to come to our house once a week. I offered to take the kid to the public lessons with all the skinny mom's in swimsuits but was told I could not.

We took our 10 month old to Fleet (off Huffmeister / Spring Cypress). Wife liked it pretty well.

I used to teach kid's swim lessons, I would suggest going somewhere that the teachers are Red Cross Certified in WSI.

You could always tell when a kid came from somewhere else.

so what's the verdict on the right age to get them started? I have an 8 month old now.

ISR won't accept you until 6 months.

We're in ISR classes at the JCC

Don't bother until they are 4. Until they are speaking full sentences and going to the bathroom on their own, there is nothing that you can't do by playing with them in the water.

Bathtime is the best time to adapt your baby to the water. splashing, bubbles, etc.

I'm actually thinking about going to Memorial Aquatic Center and seeing if I can teach a few nights a week or post for private lessons.

If it takes until 4 to speak completed sentences & be potty trained, your kid has bigger things to worry about than swimming

Granted, Its a muscle development/maturity thing too.

I've taught all ages, but in my opinion, it really isn't all that efficient until 4. Group swim lessons are a great thing for kids, assuming the teacher is any good.

I would be interested in any place that has some eye candy and perhaps allows cold alcoholic beverages if I were to get my kid signed up.

I mean, my kid needs a Wendy Peffercorn:

We've been at HSC for quite a while and like it.

This past month we ponied up for private lessons, and that was well worth the expense.

My girlfriend works for HSC. They do a pretty good job, and she is pretty passionate about her work. It seems like a good place to teach kids the basics, and the classes are small.

I don't know much on this subject but thought this was a cool video and remembered this thread being bumped -
