How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't know if I can detach the microwave from its spot, but does anyone know of a way to get it out?

Thanks

The microwave will come down, unless all of the cabinet trim was installed after the microwave went in. Even then it "should" be possible to get it out.

I'm assuming that you have a small cabinet above the microwave. If no does it vent straight into plumbing in the attic? You should be able to get up there and remove/disconnect the vents up there.

If there's a small gap above the microwave, between it and the cabinet trim, disconnect the vent plumbing, and gently push up on the microwave. The last one that I hung had a steel plate on the wall with tabs that the microwave clipped into. You can probably google the original installation instructions for your model.

There is a small cabinet above the microwave, I'll try to google some instructions and give it a shot tonight.

I'm trying to remember the details because I installed all of the kitchen appliances when my folks built their home back in 04. I think the cabinet guy had rough hung the cabinets, then cam back and trimmed them in after I hung the microwave, so the trim was flush with the top of the appliance. That of course eliminated the gap needed to raise the unit off of it's hangar.

When they had a fire 18 months later, the FD just went nuclear on what was left of the microwave and the cabinet both. I don't recommend that option in your case.

Honestly your best bet for the bird, and likely nest is to deal with it in the attic.

The only problem is that my kitchen is on the 2nd floor and there's an entire floor between my attic and that vent area...

Are you sure she's "stuck"? Birds build nests and have babies in vents quite often this time of year. First you hear the mother bird flapping around and basically building the nest. Then you don't hear much for a while; and then you hear the chirps of the babies wanting momma bird/to be fed. They someow manage to work their way out when they're big enough. Happens most every year in our bathroom vents.

Well the thing that leads me to believe that this bird is stuck is that its all the way at the base of the microwave.

If its not stuck, I don't want a birds nest in my kitchen vent b/c as of right now the vent doesn't work...

I would get it out ASAP, we've received several calls lately in reap guards to bird mites infesting people's homes, both cases, it began with birds in the vents.

Future reference for some of you, you can get either little wire screens to cover the vent or the big plastic cage vents that go on the outside of your vent. I bought the plastic cage that goes on the outside and it works great...I told my neighbors because I could see they were getting birds in their vents...they did the same and no problem. My pest control guy put up the small wire mesh inside my microwave one for me(I could not find a plastic one that was big enough for the microwave vent).

I've been wanting to put little mesh wiring in front of those vents, but don't have a ladder tall enough...

Would your guy be willing to do the same for my house? Also, how much would it be?

The little mesh wiring he just put it in at no charge. BAM pest control. My microwave vent is easy to reach, no ladder needed.

The cages were very inexpensive and I put them in myself. (ladder needed).

I have the same. I foret every summer to fix it when they leave.

I added screen to my dryer vent about 3 weeks ago because a bird started getting in there, then, 2 days later heard them trying to get in my master bath exhaust vent, so I just went around and added screening to all of them.
