I need a 14' kayak shipped to Indianapolis but the shipping cost are prohibitively expensive. I was curious if there was anyone moving to Chicago or Indianapolis or even Cincinnati and using a moving company that would add this item to their shipment (for a fee, of course).

Have you tried an actual freight company instead of UPS or Fedex? Fedex and UPS will bend you over shipping large items.

Try Estes Freight, YRC or R&L Carriers or someone like that. It'll still cost you a few hundred bucks, but I would think that's your best bet. Steal a couple pallets from somewhere, put one under each end of the kayak and you'll be good to go.

Or sell it in Houston and buy one in Indy? Would that be cheaper?

Palletize that shizz and call Fedex Freight. Shouldn't cost you more than $150.

I work for a freight forwarder, and your kayak may not be that heavy, but it's large and will be charged at a dim weight (basically the volume weight) for what it would take up on a trailer. They can't exactly just throw it on top of other freight and let it ride, so it will be taking up space on a trailer but not adding much in terms of weight. On top of that, it's not going to be just 1 truck ride. With my company, to get to IND or CVG, it's a minimum of 2 truck rides unless we have a direct to IND or CVG, which is practically never.
