just saw on the news, another kid who couldn't swim was neck deep out in the water, and now they are looking for his body. they couldn't swim, but yet were out there off a jetty. 3rd rip current, no swimming ability death already this beach season. i just don't understand why you would wade out that far knowing that you can't swim, and that rip currents are especially bad the way it has been so windy lately.

i understand it's a public beach and we all have access to enjoy it at our leisure, that's not the point i'm making. if you go to the beach and can't swim, common sense would tell me maybe i shouldn't wade out in the water on a red flag day....maybe i should just throw the football or read a book instead.

Really, these people are dumb. Natural selection.

The reason is that parents don't want to actually take care of their children. They didn't take the kids to the beach for family fun time. (if they had, the would have not taken them to the beach without everyone knowing how to swim, or been in the water with them, or not allow them to swim around the jetty.) They took them for a couple of hours of "we are at the beach...go play (and get out of my hair)!"

That's the culture we live in (as evidenced by the 3rd instance of this happening this year.)

karaoke at Christians on saturday nights is pure entertainment.

i think more often, it's a case of people thinking they can handle the current and it's no big deal, but then get overwhelmed and freak out, compounding the situation.

Why do people drive into water and then seem surprised when at a minimum their car dies or they have to be drug out by the FD's swift water rescue team, or just end up dead? Seriously, Darwin must be a busy busy man!

I asked myself this question every day when I worked for the beach patrol in high school.

Lots of parents never actually teach their kids how to swim. It's not that hard. We are born with the instinct to do it, we just need to be taught to follow it in a circumstance where we don't panic, and trust in our ability to swim.

MOST parents never really bother to do this, but they'll happily take their brood to a river, lake, or ocean where their kids are at dire risk of getting swept out in a current or walking off a dropoff.

Reminds me of when nearly a whole family drowned at Lake Somerville a few years ago, because none of them could swim, and one waded too far out and fell off a dropoff underwater, and they went in like lemmings trying to save everyone else and simply made it worse.

This... sort of... though the rip tide in Galveston was no joke last week. The problem is that most people just don't spend much near the ocean. They go thinking a dip in the ocean = a romp at the neighborhood pool... even pretty skilled swimmers in pools have problems w/ rip tides.

Rip tides + parents not accompanying their kids in the surf can make for some deadly days.

I've been in some nasty ripdides, admittedly. You ought to try kayaking through the surf when the waves are coming in pretty good...

I was talking out long rod baits in my kayak one night off High Island in 4-5 foot swells, and hit a big rip about 200 yards off the beach, and it took me out to about 400 yards pretty fast. That wasn't a problem, as that was where I was headed anyways to drop the baits in the water.

I just paddled down a couple hundred yards and came back in out of the rip.

i mean, how can you swim if you have denim jeans on in the water and a large s**** tshirt down to your knees.

never understood why certain people just go in the water fully clothed. probably the same reason they love to feed the birds and have them swarm and dive bomb everyone on the beach.
