If you were going to buy a lake house to serve as a family vacation home where would you buy?

Lake Conroe
Canyon Lake
Lake McQueeney
Lake Travis (probably too far)
Lake Livingston

Having lake-side bars/restaurants that you could drive your boat up to is highly desirable.

Definitely need more information here.

1. What's your budget?
2. Do you like to fish?
3. Do you just plan to engage in water sports?
4. Like the lake quiet or busy?

Conroe: You missed that bus 20 years ago. Too much $$$

Somerville: Still cheap, but limited lake frontage due to LOTS of parkland.

Livingston: Lake is friggin HUGE, lots of cheap lakefront.

Rayburn: See Livingston

Lake Houston: Cheap land, but the lake is a shallow murky mudhole, really. Good fishing, poor watersports.

But, if you have $$$, and want a close-by decent fishing and watersports lake, and like facilities on the water, Conroe might be what you are looking for.

Also, don't forget the Galveston bay system, too. A house on the water is doable there, too.

Lake Conroe - Expensive and crowded
Canyon Lake - If you get property on the water, you cannot have a private dock at your lot. Although, most subdivisions have their own private docks.
Lake McQueeney - Floods anytime the Guadalupe River floods.
Lake Travis (probably too far) - Crowded and water level changes alot because of the LCRA
Lake Livingston - Don't know anything about it.

What about Eagle Lake, Sam Rayburn or Toledo Bend. I don't know much about them but haven't seen them mentioned.

Personally, I consider driving a little extra to LBJ or Buchanan. There's also Medina Lake on the other side of SA but it's kinda small.
