Myself, my wife, and another couple will be going to Houston next weekend (from B/CS) to celebrate a couple of birthdays. Following is our rough plan, but I obviously could use some help filling in details on what to do, where to eat, where to stay. Any suggestions are welcome. I should note that we'd like to keep expenses reasonable - we'll splurge a little for dinner and the hotel, though. Also, my friend just had knee surgery, so we have to avoid doing a lot of walking.

1. Activities during the day on Saturday - no clue where to start with this. Museums/aquarium would normally be considered, but that doesn't work with the knee surgery thing...
2. Dinner Saturday night - wide open to suggestions. Probably somewhere around $20-30 for an entrée.
3. Hotel Saturday night - again, open to suggestions. Preferably something somewhat unique/contemporary style. Don't know what price range is reasonable.
4. Possibly brunch on Sunday, if there's a restaurant we shouldn't miss.

All opinions/suggestions welcome!

Had forgotten about the brewery. Wife I pregnant though, so that would suck for her. No kids (just the one in the oven).

33 things to do in Houston for $2 or less.

Dunno how many of these work with the knee thing but it's something to look through.

Since the Breakfast Klub is closed Sundays, The Buffalo Grille would be my go-to spot for brunch

Lots of places listed above can be reached on the metro rail too if you want the experience of seeing parts of Houston. Just check it out online. It takes you to lots of places that are within walking distance of each station.

my buddy owns the buffalo grill and for that matter, the breakfast klub, though I have never been to the BK.

I eat at the buffalo grill a couple times a week.

1.) The no walking around thing is pretty limiting. I can't think of much off the top of my head. The mueseums are great, and wouldn't require much walking.
2.) There are literally 1000's of good choice for what to eat. If you want a good steak downtown....Vic and Anthony's. If you want a little more comtempory american fare, go with Shade on 19th. It's in the Heights so you'll get to another cool part of Houston. Reef in midtwon, Mark's.... you really can't go wrong.
3.) Look at the Magnolia (i think there is a Texags/Aggie discount ususally) or ZaZa.
4.) Buffalo Grille is awesome. Empire Cafe is another good option.

Go to AMC and watch Airplane! on the big screen. It's showing at 12:30 on Saturday and 7:00 on Sunday.

Radio Music Theatre is usually an entertaining venue. Two shows Saturday night, 8:00 and 10:30. Tickets are $25 each.

Saint Arnold's. My wife isn't a beer drinker, but she likes their root beer and still manages to have a good time there. You can take your own lunch.

I'd just hop on priceline and put in a 3 or 4* hotel and do the name your own price. You could probably get a pretty nice place for half the costs. We've done it when we've stayed downtown and been very pleased.

I'll be at Anvil this Saturday for the Anvil Cocktail Class. The theme this Saturday is New Orleans Spirits. Should be a good time. 1-3ish.

Here is the email response I got from them when I inquired.

quote:
Hello!
We are so happy to hear you are interested in our cocktail classes!
And we would love to have you!
Here is the basic information regarding the cocktail 101 classes:

Cocktail classes are held the last Saturday of each month.
They usually start from 1pm and go until 3 or 4pm.
This includes a meet and greet, an aperitif or toast, and of course the class + tastings.
Tastings provide varied samples of the related spirit and class topic,
depending on the spirit and nature of the class. Although there seem to be oodles of options.
The reservations and tickets can be purchased for $50 per person at the bar.
Unfortunately, we cannot do transactions over the phone of via email, so they can only be sold in person at Anvil.
So your best bet to secure your reservation is to buy your tickets as soon as possible!
The classes are becoming increasingly popular so the sooner the better.

We open at 5pm everyday except for Sundays.
Sundays Anvil opens at 11am.
Thanks and hope to see you there!
Cheers!

we planned to do st. arnold last sat. got there about 12:30, it was full, so we went to flying saucer, had lunch/beers, then went to holocaust museum. very easy on the knees.. it's not much walking at all.

then we ate at thai pepper on w. alabama.
then back up to our neck to go to rockwells.. finished the night with a couple of tasty craft brews.
