How does this guy keep getting paid?

quote:
The San Francisco 49ers have a two-year contract agreement with quarterback David Carr, one day after the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 NFL Draft left the team's Santa Clara headquarters after several hours of talks.

Carr, 30, is expected to sign Sunday, a league source confirmed, and will provide the 49ers with a veteran quarterback presence behind starter Alex Smith, whom coach Mike Singletary said will assume the No. 1 spot heading into training camp. Singletary also noted that he liked to keep his quarterback situation competitive, which gives Carr a fighting chance to regain a starting position.

The addition of Carr, an eight-year veteran who spent the past two seasons with the New York Giants as a backup to Eli Manning, likely means the 49ers' brief love affair with one-time starter Shaun Hill has all but ended. Carr's starting experience in the league makes him an attractive No. 2 quarterback, and the 49ers are excited about the development of former Ball State standout Nate Davis, their fifth-round pick in 2009.

Carr may find himself facing an awkward welcome from All Pro linebacker Patrick Willis, who went on a Twitter campaign on Friday openly questioning how the 49ers' newest quarterback would fit into the team's plans.

In one tweet posted on his verified account, Willis wrote (sic): "I'm saying if we going to go get another qb. spend money on a difference maker. Like (Michael) vick. my opinion. And well u got urs"

Willis also posted, "We have 3 qb's that are better then him. That's a waste of his time."

Later, Willis backed off his strident tone, posting, "Ppl are really fired up right now about what I said earlier. I apologize if I hurt some feelings and if carr becomes my teammate." He also added, "I will embrace him and we will win together. And with that being said I just want to win."

because he is a solid NFL backup that is not nearly as bad as his time with the texans make you think.

Not as bad as we think? Did you see this clown play in Carolina?

Did anyone? He played half a dozen games 3 years ago for a team barely on tv and one that the Texans have only played once since then.

How in the heck can you say that? He had hardly any PT in NY and looked HORRIBLE in Carolina.

there is not enough talent available, probably why we overpaid Orlavski

carr's biggest problem is locking on to the guy he's going to pass to. great arm, but no football mind.

Carr was turrible in Carolina. Delhomme went down in 2007 and Carr got the nod, which resulted in them signing Vinny Testaverde and playing undrafted rookie Matt Moore. Carr got beat out by an undrafted rookie and father time. That doesn't spell capable backup to me.

yet despite the knowledge and insight of the houston board, NFL GMs think he is a capable backup given the rest of the dung out there.

Yeah, and one NFL GM thought he was worth the #1 pick. So what?

I've always felt that NFL GM's are so afraid to risk signing an unknown guy that they'll sign a guy who is "known" even if it's know for being bad.

Same goes for hiring coaches.

David Carr getting picked up shows you how few decent quarterbacks are in the league.

As bad as he was in Houston and even worse in Carolina, he did enough "not screwing up" in NY to get pursued by several teams needing a backup.

Anyone surprised Carr has stuck around hasn't really paid attention to what putrid choices for backup QB.

houston ag:

what does that have to do with anything? we are talking about two completely different things.

is Carr an option at starting QB in the NFL? of course not and no one is thinking he can be.

all you want your backup to do is know the playbook and not screw up if you have to get in the game. Carr showed he could do that in NY.

Yet NFL GMs in Detroit drafted three wide receivers in the first round three years in a row.

Yet NFL GMs picked 198 players ahead of Tom Brady in 2000.

Yet NFL GMs picked value how fast a player can run forty yards without pads over how well a player can actually catch or hold onto a football.

I can seriously make an entire thread about Al Davis if you want me to right now. Dumb post.

my guess is that he may have dirt on key higher ups in certain organizations who are part of the not-so-secret-anymore homosexual bathhouse underworld/culture in the NFL that has turned out to be more prevalent than anyone could have ever imagined.

seriously the only explanation i can come up with. that, or he may have been really good at providing favors to all the right people at these underground sex parties.

BMX,

The point is that just because a GM makes it a decision does not mean it's a good one. Just like everyone else, they makes mistakes and errors in judgment.

While every GM makes mistakes, I'd still trust them to make a decision about Carr over the Texags braintrust that includes people that can't find a dry cleaner in their neighborhood without help, people with homoerotic Texan fetishes, and that think Stephen McGee is better than Tony Romo.

So excuse some of us for thinking people paid to make these decisions might now just a tad more than the geniuses that post on this board.

David Carr is no Rosencopter. That is for sure. But I'd take him over Curtis Painter or Dan Orvlosky.
Houston_Ag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
But you're omitting both those other GMs who passed him over as well as those GMs (Casserly, Panthers, Giants) who made the same decision. If that decision was a good one, wouldn't Carr still be a member of one of those teams?

You can't take one GM making a move and calling it a good one simply because the guy is on staff with an NFL squad.
BMX Bandit
How long do you want to ignore this user?
no.

he wasn't in Carolina or Houston to be the back up. You can only compare NY, where he did do a serviceable job and they wanted to keep him. he got more elsewhere.

The problem is that yes, he may know the playbook, but he definitely didn't keep himself from screwing up and contributing in a big way to losses in his first stop. That's where I take issue with the argument.

If you want someone to look pretty standing on the sidelines with a clipboard in a gloved hand then Carr is definitely your guy. But should the fit hit the shan and you have to finish out the season (or even a few games) with your backup then Carr definitely isn't one I'd want.

it is not just the Texans. several of the scandals were exposed last year before being swept under the rug ($$$), but if certain sources are right, expect for the lid to be blown off this season, exposing many many big names. this could rock the sporting world and change the perception of the NFL in the minds of millions, folks.

Ignore all the years he sucked. Look at the one place where he didn't completely **** up because BMX says so.

I did hear something on the radio yesterday that I'd never heard before, that Carr never made football his number 1 priority. He never came in early or worked late with the guys who did all the extras to try to improve their game and that's why he'll never make it as a starter.
BMX Bandit

or because that is what the NFL GMs that want him to be a backup are more concerned with.

That was the knock on him from the beginning.

That and the fact that he wanted daddy to be able to come watch all his practices.

Have you been playing golf with Chollie Cassellie?

I've yet to read or see an interview with an NFL GM who says "nah, we're not really looking for a guy who can step in and lead the team if the starter goes down. I just want someone who can look good on the sideline and not mess anything up."

that is coachspeak.

based on the amount of the contract, they are not expecting Carr to come in and compete to be the starter.

don't get me wrong, I would be worried if my team picked up Carr. I just don't understand the surprise that he is still in the league given the competition.
Ferris Wheel Allstar
How long do you want to ignore this user?
^ I would agree that it is coach speak except that it was Singletary that said it.

Much of this may be true but while you toil away in your cube whining about traffic, $6 beers, clubs that are too crowded with dbags (by the way many of you are dbags), the crowds at St. Arnold's and rogue cops I am still making seven figures on top of the $30 mil I took off your pathetic team.
