Anyone else run in to them? The Exxon station at Shepherd and Westheimer is always teeming with kids selling chocolate for charity. Anyone know if it's legitimate or not?

I mainly ask because one kid offered them to me for $4, and when I came back out with change to buy them, another kid told me they were $5.

it's gotta be a scam.

they're all over midtown too. i have a hard time believing there's that many kids in the area raising money for charity (but i'm a cynical guy).

me and the fiance walked into the coldstone on gray in midtown and some kids were trying to sell us candy bars out of boxes.

they cited it was to keep them out of trouble. what service or organization offers this? im really interested to know if its legit, because it wasnt the first time. How do we not know they buy them in bulk at sams, then upcharge them to fund drug purchases, or what not?

but my point was they were outside of COLD STONE CREAMERY. The irony wasnt funny at all to me that they couldnt figure out that their location could have been the worst spot in history. Who would want a nestle crunch when they're about to eat ice cream?! LOL

nothing keeps kids out of trouble like shilling chocolate in midtown with no adult supervision.

What about the guys that are selling "raffle" tickets at the intersections? I know they were at the Blalock and I-10 intersection along with the Gessner one too. They guys make me skeptical.

As far as the kids, I think its a scam.

Let's assume they are lying about the charity part. What else could they be selling candy for? Things are not getting this bad are they? This is at the level of some 3rd world countries, kids selling stuff on streets and corners.

I've seen kids shilling for cold, hard cash at intersections. The parents are there & they're trying to get cash for some field trip or something. Just beggin'. Not selling anything & little kids weaving through traffic.
Ridiculous.

The chocolate thing smells of scam.

I forget if this was in Houston or San Antonio, but 1-2 years ago a news team did a story on these kids selling chit to "keep me off the streets" and found that it was one 35-45 yo lazy-looking SOB driving them around in a van at all hours of night then raking in the profit with small percentage going to the kids. The parents of these kids likely (as you might assume) dont even know where they are - that's why the main man can recruit so many of them. Legal pseudodrug dealers. Call the local news and have them investigate - should make for an easy, entertaining story. Might be the same guy - slightly overweight, bald, AA (not AsianAmerican) man.

Call the police next time you see them.

It is what Benny says -- some older dude using the kids. I've seen guys buying up boxes of candy then passing them out in the Sam's parking lot.

A few years back, I got the story about "selling candy to raise money for our football team." I asked, "what team do you play for?"

"Yates Freshman team".

"Cool, how are y'all doing this year?"

"We're 10 and 0"

It was September.
