I saw the City Market is closing in a couple of weeks. I never went to the store, but heard good things about it. I heard they gave ice cream cones to people that came in, and also carried your groceries to your car.

Personally I got to know the grocery store owner years and years ago. He's a good guy and friendly and open. I know he loved his grocery store.

Sad to see it close.

Apparently, the building owner didn't raise the rent rates for 20 years, which in my opinion is overly generous but also mismanagement on her part. Then she raised the rate after 20 years and the grocery owners didn't agree to it. so the building owner evicted the grocery owner, which in my opinion should have been more expected than shocked as the grocery owners claimed on news telecasts. It appears to be the grocery owner's attempt to gain public support.

Regardless of the reason, disappointed to see it close.

Any stories or information about this store would be appreciated.

Yeah we liked the store as well and hate to see it close down. Didn't like the public way it went down as I think the landlord was more than generous over the years with the store owners. Hate that they couldn't figure out a way to make it work.

From my understanding, when it was sold to them 20 years ago, there was an agreement that the rent would not increase for 20 years. Sounds like there was plenty of time to anticipate an increase, but the reality of increasing to market rate after being capped at rates from the turn of the century was too much.

Just saw their annnouncment in January. They act like the landowner is some mad man and this "came out of nowhere". There are no surprises with rental rates, unless they were negotiating in good faith for a renewal option at a certain rate, and the landowner decided they wanted to go a different direction. This is weird.
