Apologies if this belongs in the religion forum but thought I may get better responses here. I have recently relocated to Dallas and am looking to get involved at a Methodist church in town. Does anyone have any recommendations for me to try out? I have seen plenty of options online but am trying to narrow it down. In person worship strongly preferred.

Which side of the aisle are you use to sitting? Progressive or Traditional?

The one at SMU is really nice. I've played there several times.

You are next door to Highland Park Methodist. They have a branch church in East Dallas called Munger Place which we were members of but it's a little more progressive than the mother campus although it wasn't obnoxious or anything. At least it was 5+ years ago.

There is also First United Methodist downtown but it felt like a bunch of skeletons were members the few times we went. Very traditional. Again, this was 5+ years ago.

First Richardson on 75/Arapaho. Not sure if you prefer large or small churches, but it's on the larger size, as far as Methodist churches go.

I'd suggest HP Methodist if you are looking for big church and Lakewood or Lake Highlands Methodist if you are looking for a bit smaller. It's been 15+ years ago since I went to the first two. I've also been to White Rock Methodist long ago and they were even smaller.

Been at Munger for years. It's a wonderful church family. Strongly recommend.

Didn't what's her name retire? The singer? Heard that and feels like that would be a huge loss there.

Yes, Kate Miner. She retired back in April. Huge hole to fill but they're working on it. Kelly Riley has taken over music duties but not sure what the long term plan is.

Thank you everyone for all of the recommendations! This is exactly what I was looking for, I've got my work cutout for me the next few Sundays.

Yes. Thank you. Sorry I couldn't remember her name. She was incredible.

no to turn this into a holy war thread but if you lean more traditional, then stay away from here. after 15 years i left because this place lost its damn mind (pastors marching with BLM, book studies on White Fragility, etc.).

Yes. She is phenomenal. One of a kind and irreplaceable. An original Mungarian from Day 1.

I've been a longtime member at HPUMC and really enjoy it.

Took a short hiatus and moved over to Munger Place after I got divorced (was married at HPUMC and ex's family attends church there). Andrew Forrest is the preacher at Munger and I really like him. I attended church there for a year or so with no complaints, but then one Sunday felt a draw to go back to HP to try it out. Something about it just felt like home as cliche as that sounds, so I have been going back there ever since.

Would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

HP is definitely more of a big church feel in my opinion. As someone who was used to having someone to go to church with and then was suddenly on my own, it was hard for me to go and not know anyone. Probably a little bit of my fault on that as I'm not the most social guy. I think you'd probably have to work a little more to get involved there.

Munger feels a little more like a close knit family. Lots of younger East Dallas folks. But they don't have a formal choir (which I enjoy), and I would guess they don't have the amount of programs and groups that HP does as they are a smaller church.

Just for reference, I'm 35.

Like I said happy to answer any questions for you.

The sister campus to above is St Andrew in Plano (Bush and Tollway). Not really a far drive and we like Scott and Arthur preaching (traditional service is at 9:30). Nice organ as well and also has stuff for the kids/modern service options.
