I have relative in town from the UK and they want some good Tex Mex. What's your favorite place in Fort Worth not named Joe T's?
debased

born & raised in south Fort Worth (tcu/zoo area)

1. Uncle Julios (been eating there since my sister '94 worked there over summers). Favorites: Guadalajara (bacon wrapped shrimp w/ jalapeno & fajitas), Fajitas, Chicken Enchiladas, Queso, Lucky horseshoe Margarita
2. El Rancho Grande- (one of my parents first date in '67), Favorites: beef enchiladas are amazing, chicken chalupa w/ Guac, Carne Guisada. Owner is good people
3. Esperanzas- park place- (live 2 mins from here, been going since it opened) Favorites: Joe T's enchilada dinner, Monterrey Enchiladas (not on menu), carnitas or barbocoa plate, table side guac, Margaritas are great & strong. WARNING! Over the past year we've had several bad experiences: tables around us that ordered after us got their food before us when it wasn't busy, took 15-20mins to get our initial drinks from the bar and then they never asked if we wanted a second drink, receipt was incorrect, while tcu is in school you can expect a large table of frat & sorority kids drinking & loud
4. Chuys- been a fan since brother moved to Austin in '90
5. Benitos- Magnolia- sentimental family favorite-
6. Mi Cocina- brisket tacos, mambo taxi

Born and raised as well...... I will defend it. See your reason #5.

Sorry to be negative here.... but we have been very disappointed with the quality of the fajitas at Uncle Julio's at their locations in Alliance and Grapevine.

you can be negative. I don't remember having a bad fajita experience at fort worth location. Every restaurant is going to have a bad day every now and then.

I don't frequent Funky Town that often, but stumbled upon Enchiladas Ole. That place was a dive, and was awesome. Best salsa I've had, and they sent me home with a 20oz cup of it after they heard me talking about it.

My 2 favorites (not named Joe T's): Uncle Julio's and The Original. I've heard good things about Mesero in Clearfork, but haven't had the chance to try it yet.

Big fan of Uncle Julio's. Won't go wrong there. La Playa Maya is excellent as well.

I always figured people like The Original the same way they like Joe T's - it's just been there forever. I don't care that much for either.

Esperanza's is good. (get the migas. tremendous)

Also found a new place out on 199 just south of 820 called Mezcales. Very tasty.

Never cared for Uncle Julios growing up.

Last 5-6 years, it's been our go-to Mexican place.

Though to be fair for the last 5-6 years all we've ever eaten there is the steak fajitas and queso.

It's a wonder El Paseo actually sells any entrees - I could eat my weight in their salsa.

For Uncle Julios, you also need to have plenty of the melted mexican butter w/tortillas. I can sit at the bar, drink margaritas, and eat tortillas/mexican butter all day.
Staff - take out the trash.

Have not considered just eating tortillas & the melted butter. Damn good idea. Will try it.

Also the cajeta desert is amazing

Ernesto's Tacos On McCart. Eat there then shop at my pawnshop just down the street. A tad more Mexican than texmex but great street tacos.

And +1 for MiCocina brisket tacos and Mambo Taxi's

Uncle Julio's always seemed overrated to me. And it's packed.

Manly hate it because the noise level is 1000000db with the concrete floors and it being in an old car dealership or repair place with no walls or anything.

Food is still pretty good. Would always pick benitos over anywhere else in fw.

Uncle Julio's is where I discovered that I actually liked my beef medium rare so in that regard it holds a special place in my heart.

Mercado Juarez...old skool tex mex. Another one is Campo Verde in Dalworthington Gardens. They may still have the Christmas lights up.
Hole in the wall type place...Los Amigos in grapevine. It's been there for close to 30 yrs. BYOB, free beer and margaritas.

Just avoid Campo Verde during Christmas time. It's become everyone's favorite instagram picture and therefore gets packed.

This. It was like eating in a smoky rundown strip club

Pulido's was our family spot growing up (the one on 377). Although I've been to the original by the railyard and I didn't notice a difference. It's pretty good and not nearly as expensive as the big names like Joe Ts, MiCo, or Uncle Julio's.
