My wife and I are coming to Texas (back to Texas for me). While I love Texas and wanted to come back for some time, we are actually doing so to find better schools for our son. Can anyone help. We are having a time locating the best schools in north Dallas for our 4 year old son who is diagnosed Austistic on the High functioning end of the scale. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you.

Mark

P.S. If you would like to chime in but not type in my number is 405-777-9419. Again, thank you and thanks from my son Samuel.

Some places for you to check into:

The St. Anthony School in Carrollton
The Shelton School in N. Dallas

Public school district with reputations for serving the population well seem to be Lewisville ISD and Plano ISD. Every school district will have its success stories and its horror stories about serving their special kids. Good luck!

Thank you for your response. We are not going to be able to pay for private school right away. We have looked at Plano and Lewisville and have read good things. The information on this topic is like drinking from a firehose and looking for a needle in a haystack all at the same time.

I've heard Plano and Lewisville as well, but just in random conversation. Seems like Frisco has come up as well. Best of luck...

Shelton School in Dallas. Also, I have a friend who takes care of kids with special needs. She's a Sooner but a great girl and great with kids of course!

My wife is a 2nd grade teacher in Richardson ISD, and she has at least one Autistic kid every year. I would hope all of the major districts would be fune.

Once he enters grade school, if you can afford private, you may want to consider The Winston School. One of my friend's sons goes there and it has been great for them.

Thank you so very much for all of your input. It is invaluable. I wish we could pay private school costs but my wife and I will be gov't employees and you know the old song and dance. All of this is great school for thought.

Let's keep this info coming if you can chime in...

Thanks!!!!

Shelton is not a fit for children w autism. More and more children w autism are showing up in public schools. The best districts will be the best fit. Richardson, Coppell, Lewisville, Plano and Frsico would be good places to start.

Plano was one of the first school districts in the state to really take autism seriously. In the 90s and early 2000s people used to move their families to Plano from all over the state specifically for their programs for autistic students. Other districts may have caught up with them, but I would be sure and make an appointment to talk with someone in that district. Also, look at Richardson and Frisco.

Our Children's House at Baylor - Irving, call Linda Laws the Manager at (972) 790-8505 ext. 258

It's located in Irving just off 183 and is a child development center for children with medical and special needs as well as their typically developing siblings. OT, PT, Speech Therapists are there twice a week and there is a full time RN on staff as well.

I have two kids in Plano ISD, and we are friends with two couples that have autistic children (one of the couples has two austistic children). One of the kids (4th grader) would fall into the high functioning category while the other two (2nd grade & kindergarten) are probably more moderate cases. Anyway, the parents have been extremely pleased with the district so far. The youngest two kids went to pre-school programs at The Shelton School so the parents have some basis for comparison, and they've been very happy with Plano so far.
