building a deck in the backyard. I seem to remember reading that I needed a permit, but now that i'm ready to start the deck, I can't seem to find anything on it.

Anybody know? I'm in FW proper, FWIW

Didn't see it on FWRs link but I remember having someone from the city at one of our Neighborhood meetings say you needed one if the deck was higher than 6" above grade.

I may or may not have built mine more than 6"' above grade without a permit. It's not my fault as I've never been good with a tape measure or ruler.

If you build it yourself, you will become what we called a "Weekend Warrior". People that build all sorts of things over the weekend when we did not have code enforcement people on duty. Unless your neighbors or HOA rat you out, the City will likely never know or care. They don't have the staff or time to go looking for problems.

so you're saying to just build it and not worry about the permit?

the wife wants a roof/pergola over the damn thing, so I doubt I'd get away with just building it.

If you're doing a roof it makes things a little tougher going without the permit. Especially being in a Historic District.

You can shoot the lady that's in charge of the Historic Committee a note and she'll point you in the right direction.

I think you live in one of Joe Frank's houses so you could always shoot him a note to see what he recommends. Joe's a good guy and will likely be more than happy to help even if he's not doing it. If you've never met him you can mention my name.

we bought the house from Joe, so I could certainly ask him.

I'd definitely start with Joe then. He'll know the best route. He's on good terms with all the right people.
