Looking for good hole in the wall mexican places for lunch in or around downtown. The ofice is just west of downtown and I've found a good one on Maple avenue called Avila's. It's in an old house. Any other suggestions?
If you can drive out to Avila's then try Escondido just a minute or two further west. It is the ultimate hole-in-the-wall. Squeeky floors and everything.
Enchiladas Mexicanas is my favorite and you can order some extra green salsa to add to the regular to spice it up. Great stuff.
I used to eat at Pepper Garden a lot, too. Pretty good and pretty cheap, too, considering where it is. Commerce and Ervay.
Herrera's is always a good choice. But, Escondido was the first one that popped into my head. Awesome lunch specials. 5 years ago, they had a lunch special for each day of the week that was $2.75 including Iced Tea. It's not that cheap anymore, but still pretty cheap compared to most. I've always thought Ojeda's was the same food as El Fenix. Pretty good, but there are better around.
Tried the tacos at Fuel City last week and have to agree they are good.
Along the same lines, and possibly better, I have to recommend El Tacaso. Similar deal to Fuel City but multiple locations.
I prefer the Shell at Walnut Hill and 35 because they offer tortas. Try the fajita torta, good bread, avocado, onion, cilantro, about $5 and mmmm good. Barbacoa tacos really good too, not greasy.
PSA: After reading this thread, we tried to go to Pepe y Mito's last night. They close at 3 on Mondays and Tuesdays. Had to settle for Twisted Root, which was a let down after anticipating some good hole in the wall mexican food.
Gonzales in Oak Cliff (Next to the old Texas theater) is awesome. It's off of Zang & Jefferson. It's the best I've found so far in town.....I'm looking forward to trying some of the recommendations on this forum.
happy hour - getting drunk is the only time Ojeda's might be worth a trip. have the meltdown margaritas and some chicken soup while you enjoy the fessstive social atmosphere, but skip the merely average entrees.
late dinner - La Casita on lowest Greenville. the best home-style texmex in dallas and a true hole in the wall run entirely by one woman as a labor of love. opens at night and closes early in the morning.
hangover breakfast - Herrera's on Illinois (or Maple). those beer goggles dissolve fast under the heat of chilaquiles smothered with their salsa which is puro mexicano.

1) Herrera's on Maple (the 2C, closed on Tuesdays, Hillary Clinton makes campaign stops there ... ok, so ignore that) 2) Pepe y Mito's on Elm (#10, service is spotty) 3) Avila's on Maple (Nacho Avila, parking a disaster sometimes)
100) Ojeda's on Maple (Enchiladas de Fajita, not a hole-in-the-wall, horrible salsa)
