How long do you want to ignore this user?
I recently found an apartment in the Las Colinas area. I need to choose an electric provider, and the choices I've been suggested are:

Ambit
TXU Energy
Cirro Energy
Green Mountain Energy

I was wondering if anyone had any insight to these or any other electric company. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

I use relient, it's fixed and reasonable.

not sure if it's the best, it was just that easy to transfer from my lasst place to the new place.

Go to powertochoose.com and get the cheapest fixed rate you can find from a company that doesn't suck.

It's all coming from the same place.

Any thoughts on a month to month versus a 12 month contract?

They will rape you on month to month. Gexa ended up charging me almost 2.5 times what they started me at.

I live at Arbors of Las Colinas. Only thing i can say is def not Green Mountain... I switched to Reliant (way better).

I have stuck with TXU because of my aversion to long term contracts and fees. Came close to changing a couple of times but never pulled the trigger.

Last month's bill average cost per kwh was 11.75 cents. While I have not shopped around, that doesn't seem terrible. I am on what ever plan they have put me on that does not require a contract or active request on my part - so month to month.

Go with Champion Energy out of Houston and you can get 12 month fixed for .09/kwh. If it asks for discount code, use SUPERSAVER. There is a $9.95/mo fee or you can get closer to .10/kwh with no fee. For me, my usage makes the fee a better deal. I have used Champion for the last 9 months and my lights work just like they always have with the other companies. Plus, instead of automatically switching me to higher rate plan when my 9 month contract is up (like most companies will), they sent me an email a month in advance reminding me that my locked-in rate will be expiring. www.championenergyservices.com

I went with Cirro, they have a great deal at 9.6 cents at 1500kwh average and 9.9 cents at lower usage. Mention the direct mail offer to get that rate; that promo started recently so it should still be available. This is a 12 month contract which I would recommend because rates will only go up from here. If you could lock in anywhere near this rate for multiple years I would in a heartbeat.

As mentioned above, the electricity is all the same the only difference is billing and customer service which I've heard is pretty good with Cirro.

I have a 24 month contract with Direct energy, and have locked in lower rates as they have come down over the last several months.

I'm using Reliant's Power Tracking plan right now, have been at or below .09/kwh the past few months but that is because NYMEX natural gas is below $4. Even with $6 gas I think it is a competitive plan (and I don't expect gas to get above that in the coming year).

Had YEP the last year and switched to Gexa for the Frequent Flyer miles program they have. I think for the most part most elec companies are pretty similar and you'll be pinching pennies by looking around too much - in general of cousre. I am sure there are a few that are a little on the high side.

In order to sign up for this rate you have to actually get the mail offer with a discount code on it. Called in being kind of vague in my question about the offer and she looked me up but I was not on their mailing list, oops. Thanks for the tip though.

Also pretty sure that offer is only good in west texas (wtu, aep north service area)

Thats weird if they wouldnt accept that, I wasnt on the mailing list either but the rep told me that you just had to mention you heard about it (I bet if you call back and talk to someone else they would do it). As far as everywhere its being offered I'm not sure, but I'm in north Dallas serviced by Oncor. Your profile says you are in Dallas also...

A word of advice for everyone, make sure that the company you go with is stable and reputable. I tried to save some money by going with a noname company a year ago and they went bankrupt (I had to switch to another company and pay a higher rate anyway). Also, the customer service was outsourced to India and they couldnt answer any of my questions. It is nice to have local customer service in case you need it.
