Im thinking about switching my energy provider given some of the great rates that some of these "smaller" companies like this offer. Is there any catch to some of their great offers?

I'm with Reliant right now and am looking to switch.

DO NOT USE GEXA.

And yes there is a catch. After your great rate expires they will jack up your rate if you aren't on a new contract. Gexa more than doubled mine. My last electric bill with them was over $300 for a one bedroom apartment.

Most of the companies will do this which is why the state is rethinking deregulation.

Don't get a variable rate no matter how enticing it looks. Go for the cheapest locked rate and make SURE you sign another contract before yours expires.

But regardless of that I would stay the hell away from Gexa. Their customer service was atrocious.

Just don't be retarded and sign a variable rate no matter how nice it looks. Go with the cheapest locked rate, be happy with it.

I have Gexa locked in at 11.9c for a year.

I haven't had any trouble with Gexa so far, their customer service is sometimes a little backed up, but you can leave your phone number and they will call you back.

I've used Texas Power for about 3 years now and highly recommend them. My bill was 42.40 last month for an 1100 sq ft apartment.

I'm happy with StarTex as well.

My first bill with StarTex was 1/3 what it was with my last Gexa bill.

CoServ, but it isn't deregulated so you have to be in the service area. Mainly Denton county with some coverage in the bordering counties.

Link....I don't believe this is the case..you understand you would be paying more under regulation? They may change the rules but going back to a regulated industry would be a huge logistical mess.

Not sure what you want a link to. That the state is rethinking regulation? Yesterday recent enough? http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/business/6301436.html

As for regulated energy being more expensive where has that been the case? Certainly not in TX.

Um get your facts straight you would be paying more today if it was a regulated industry....I dont' have time to pull the numbers but if you want me too I will tomm..If you read that article has nothing to do with regulating the industry again...has to do with cities buying in bulk from the REPs.

Which defeats the purpose of having your own choice...I guess we want the gvt to make our choices for us.

Anything else???

hahaha..Nice you produce an article that you says is about re-regulation then I show its not and you come back with that hahahhahaha....

This is awesome! A rookie tells me to get my facts straight with absolutely none of their own.

No, I don't want govt making choices for me. I do, however, want government to provide enough oversight to assist in situations where the consumer is getting screwed.

The consumer got hosed and continues to get hosed by Texas electricity deregulation.

I have yet to see someone successfully defend the way Texas electricity deregulation happened or the current state with any facts.

At a higher level, yes, deregulation makes complete sense.

In its current implementation, deregulation failed.

So you say the state is thinking about re regulating then post an article that says nothing about it...hahahahahhahahahha....wait hahahahahhaha...

parts of east texas are actually still regulated, i think mainly co-ops so that could be the major difference. My father worked for an electric providor and their rates were aroun 7-8 when the best rates we could get here in dfw were 12-14.

Someone want to show me the proof that deregulation is not working..Here is something to think about..Same people *****ing about their bills are the same ones that did when the industry was regulated.....Texas uses mainly natural gas to produce electricy so were hand cuffed to what the price of gas is trading at to set the price.

Again someone show me some proof other than people calling up complaining about their bills???

I doubt the co-op was offering 7 to 8 cents if so that's because they get massive tax breaks.....The deregulated industry employees many texans and produces much tax reveune for the state..To re regulate would be foolish..IMHO

Jessie...with all due respect, deregulation...while good in theory in a free market system...also exposes the greed of corporations at the expense of the individual.

Like NoACDammit, I've had my issues with GEXA. I opted to take advantage of their open market pricing about two years ago and paid as little as 8.5 cents per kilowatt hour. When natural gas prices rose, so did my rate. No big deal there. But when natural gas prices collapsed GEXA kept raising the rate. At one point it was well north of 20 cents per kilowatt hour.

I stayed on that plan for an additional three months, thinking they were going to follow the trend in the price of natural gas. They didn't. Quite simply, they were gouging people because they could...there was nothing to stop them from doing it.

I'm still with Gexa, but now am on a fixed rate of about 11 cents.

Am I mad? A little. Mad at Gexa, mad at myself for thinking they'd do the right thing. Mad at myself for staying with that plan for an additional three months.

I am for a deregulated economy...but it's not as cut and dried as you make it out to be.
