Don't know whats causing it but I would make sure to get an estimate on it before fixing it. IF there is something wrong, coupled with the fact that it is 2.5 years old it might be a better idea to just buy a new one. I know that sounds sick but if it is a couple hundred bucks, plus you can count on the bulb going out soon. The prices for DLP are pretty low too.

DLP can be repaired fairly cheaply. They are not like the old tube tv that you just chunked out. Could be your build or your chip. Call a repairmen.

When my DLP went bad I had just replaced the bulb for like $300, and some part broke, can't even remember what it was, anyway was going to just buy the part for like $400 plus labor, and Toshiba didn't make the TV anymore so they didn't carry replacement parts. It wasn't even 2 years old and they didn't have parts. After going off on them and going back and forth for like a month they finally agreed to send out a refurbished TV at no cost. The point is though after like $700 in parts plus labor you could probably buy a new TV for less than $1500. It's almost disposable the way the parts are so expensive.
