Does anyone have any suggestions for a family law attorney in the Austin/Killeen area that might be willing to consult on this?
I have a family member in their early 60s who has blown through ~$400k in cash over the last year (we have no idea where it went. I can roughly account for ~$150k of it) and is now penniless and effectively destitute. There is a pattern to the behavior - they spent ~$200k in the early 90s over 2 years, drained joint estate accounts multiple times, and borrowed money from other family members multiple times and never paid back. They also haven't paid income taxes in multiple years since becoming an independent contractor. They also didn't pay any cap gains tax on the last land purchase. I suspect they owe a significant amount (over $100k) to the IRS
They have ~$500-800k tied up in a jointly owned commercial property that is likely selling in the next few months. This is the last money they will have directly available to them. They are also a hoarder whose house is in disarray and has probably 30-40 cats that run their life. They have done 3 extensive house remodels in the last 6 years cleaning up the mess the cats make inside.
My family is to the point of looking at guardianship options over at least financial matters. We need to ensure that money is locked up in a trust so she has it available to live on. We attempted this 6-7 years ago with the last land sale and money she received, but she went around the handshake agreements with the financial advisor and still drained her funds. The relative is unmarried and has no kids.
This person understands they have serious issues but won't deal with medical professionals for treatment. I'm not sure non-court ordered financial management is an option but would love to discuss more details with an attorney
