I have one going out (starting to leak) and will need to replace 2 of them.

Thoughts on Tankless?

Typical Install price?

I had Abacus plumbing come by for fun and tell me that replacing (2) tank water heaters with 1 indoor tankless was going to be something like $15,000-$18,000.

This was after I had an estimate of $4,000 for non-recirculating indoor tankless or $5,000 for a recirculating (and removing both tanks ).

I paid $4300 for a non recirculating Navien 4 years ago. It works great

Quote was for over $8k.

Kind of like solar...payback does not exist right now.

Other items learned:

1) Maintenance is critical to tankless.
2) They replaced more tankless units in the freeze (gas and electric)
3) Circuit board issues.

Going back to the old tin cans for less then half installed. Will probably be the future owners issues (if/when) we move.

3500-4000. Don't pay more. Make sure you get a pump on it.

That's a good price. did they include a recirculating system?

I guess my quote of $4000 wasn't so with a $1700 tankless.

I got a similar quote from Radiant. Now I know how they pay for all those commercials.

Slightly off topic but I went with a heat pump water heater when replacing propane heaters a few years ago. Between Fed and Austin Energy rebates, my break even was well < 5 years. Went with AO Smith's 80 Gallon Hybrid Heat Pump. Bonus is that it helps cool the attic space that the heater sits in.
