My daughter has been picked by her teachers for the AVID program for her freshman year at Cedar Ridge. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this program? Just want to make sure the program is worth it before she commits to it next year.

I am familiar with the program but not in RRISD. Is your child doing fine academically but could be pushed to a higher/advanced level with additional support? If so, it might be a good fit. They teach a lot of organizational skills that will serve her well in high school and college. The first question I would ask would be about why your daughter was recommended. From their answer, you can probably ascertain whether or not the program is a good fit.

From a teacher perspective students are usually selected based upon various factors... Such as: low income criteria, parents not attending college, a student who works hard but is earning grades in the C/D range, etc.

It's a great program... They teach them a lot of organizational skills as well as study techniques. Our AVID program spends a lot of time teaching them how to actually get the most out of tutorials as well as how to aprropriatly interact and talk with teachers.

That sounds like a great program

I spoke with the teachers and their reasoning was that she lacks motivation. This has been something that we have been working on the last few months. Her grades are primarily B's but Spanish just kicked her butt this year. We don't meet the other criteria of low income or first to attend college so I am not sure if she will even be accepted into the program.
I appreciate the feedback on Avid.

My older son was in AVID his 8/9 grade year at Canyon Ridge Middle and Vandegrift High. While the AVID program is advertised as mentioned above, it can look differently at different schools. For example, our school has families who mostly all attended college and is a very high achieving community. AVID at our school seemed to get some of your kids who are average academically and challenge them. They are required to take at least one Pre-AP or AP class. My son finds that on-level classes are sometimes too easy, but the rigor of some of the AP to be too much. Being in AVID gave him some confidence. They do work on notetaking, peer tutoring, explore colleges, do interest inventories. I thought it was a good program.

Also, he had to do an essay and interview to get into the program.

The avid teacher at Cedar Ridge left after 2 weeks. It has been taught by a football coach since then, if that tells you anything.
