Anyone heard details on this. Is it real? Are they really going to put a toll road on the east side of Lakeway AND through the nature conservatory? I am not a tree hugger, but don't want this running right by my neighborhood. Anyone else have insight?

I first heard about it in the spring, then I saw these articles in that Community Impact newsletter that comes out every few months. They are looking in that area because 620 just gets worse and worse as more people move out here. I always avoid it if I can. I just don't know if Michael Dell would sell parts of his ranch. He might be for it for all I know.

The other map I saw on this link below had a proposal to make that toll road and then link it up with 45 in south Austin to complete a loop. They would connect 45 to 290 and then 71 in the southwest and bring it through Bee Cave.

Who knows with CAMPO. We have no input on it and they drop these bombshells every now and then to make waves. If it happens, I hope I am long moved out far west.

I used to live out in Oak Hill, and in 2000 they started to force business to close (Vic's Diner being one of them - probably the best breakfast place out that way at the time). Just in the last couple of years have they made any progress and I still do not think all is finalized.

So, for a large project like this to go through Lakeway, Michael Dell's ranch, and right on top of Barton Creek...I can't see that happening honestly anytime in the next 20 years at the pace these things move.

I live in Barton Creek West, so this would be fairly close to our quiet location, which would be sad.

The city planners of Lakeway don't want 45 to be layed down over the existing 620 so they are pushing the alternate path between Steiner wealthy homes and River Place uber wealthy homes, over the river, treading next to Michael Dell's personal ranch, through sensitive Balcones Preserve land (protecting the Black Cap Vereo and the GOlden Cheek Warbler), and up through Bee Caves.

It's a tall order. The City will have to agree to upend every single principle of thoughtful development it has ever had to do this.

When has the city had any plans for thoughtful development?

This isn't going to happen anytime soon. 45 SW needs to be built first, and that's not going to happen for awhile because SOS crapped all over TXDOT's EIS. TxDOT will revise it, SOS will sign off on it, and then SOS will sue.

The environmental groups will have a field day with route. There's all kinds of good warbler habitat through that area.

Yes but 45 south is going to be built over super sensitive re-charge zone (everything south and west of Austin is the area that gathers water sends it down through the aquifer before it comes back above ground in San Antonio's rivers.) they are eventually going to get it approved and the highway will be put on piers above ground with some kind of runoff protection.

That will then be the model for 45 between 4 points (2222 and 620) and 45 south.

5-10 years...take out every warbler, salamander, and Cali export that you need to get this done.

I live on 620 (Cedar Park right before 45) and work in Steiner Ranch. I haven't driven 620 to/from work in 3 years.... Problem is the back way is starting to get just as bad. I'd love for them to do this, but don't see it happening. If they are trying to go anywhere near/through Steiner it's not happening either. Steiner does not want to be connected to the rest of Austin via a major road...

I agree with the Californians. The others don't bother me, and I would much rather have the intact preserve land than a road to accommodate more Californians.

See letter sent to residents of my neighborhood yesterday, which contains some links to appropriate areas:

My fellow BCW neighbors,

As many of you have heard, the City of Lakeway made a proposal to the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) that would involve a toll-road bisecting the land between Barton Creek West and the Lake Hills Church. Lakeway requested $3 million be allocated for a feasibility study on an elevated 6-lane toll road to help alleviate congestion on RR 620 and create a bypass around Lakeway and Bee Cave.

At this point, the HOA Board would like to remain neutral with respect to the political and regulatory process taking place, but wants to provide our residents with as much information as possible.

Below please find information and links for your reference, which we will continue to provide as it becomes available. Please note that some of this information has been provided by residents and has not been verified.

Media coverage and a map is available through the Bee Cave Bee posting here. There was also a very helpful article with excellent quotes published in the Statesman on July 4, 2014. Unfortunately you must have a Statesman account to access the article, but it can be located in the archives for that date under the headline, "Lakeway eyes traffic relief via old expressway loop."

On September 8, 2014, there was a public CAMPO hearing at which the proposal was discussed. Several BCW residents attended that meeting. The agenda for that meeting is available here. One resident's summary of that meeting is available on a private website created by a neighbors' son. The website also has information about the toll and advocates rejection of the project. It also has a link to an on-line petition to stop the toll.

According to CAMPO, the request for a feasibility study is still just a proposal.

According to the CAMPO representative at the September 8 meeting, members of the public have until October 6, 2014 to submit comments to CAMPO for consideration in their vote during their next monthly meeting as to whether the feasibility study should be approved. Any such comments can be submitted by emailing CAMPO representative Dan Dargevics at dan.dargevics@campotexas.org.

CAMPO also created an on-line survey for citizens to provide feedback with respect to the proposed feasibility study. That survey states that the public comment period is scheduled to close at September 30, 2014 at 12 p.m.

Additionally, CAMPO encourages citizens to contact their elected officials - Commissioner Gerald Daugherty (Gerald.Daugherty@co.travis.tx.us) and Judge Biscoe (Sam.Biscoe@co.travis.tx.us - (512) 854-9555). Please note that Judge Biscoe is retiring and will be replaced by the official elected in November. The Democratic candidate for his position is Sarah Eckhardt and the Republican candidate is Mike McNamara.

The CAMPO board will make their official vote on October 13, 2014.

In order for the feasibility study to be approved at the October 13 meeting; CAMPO
emphasizes that it would have to be approved by all jurisdictions affected.

If the feasibility study is rejected at the October 13 meeting, Lakeway could try to request
that the project be included as part of the 2040 budgeting plan year (please note that CAMPO
indicates 2040 is not actually reflective or a project start or end date, it is simply a budgeting
plan year). If that were the case, Lisa Weston at CAMPO would be the person to contact. Her
email is lisa.weston@campotexas.org

Won't ever happen. Pie in the sky. There are too many hurdles (I.e. On the federal level) which will prevent it.

Just because they can find other land that Warblers and Vireos inhabit doesn't take into account the other reasons the preserve was created for - Karst invertebrates (I.e. Caves), other species of concern, .etc.

this is is just politicians trying to make their constituents feel better.

I don't think it will ever happen either. Can't believe a feasibility study costs $3M.

Sending the proposed toll through the 620/2222 intersection won't improve anything for the four points area. City of Austin erected a game fence from the top of tumble weed hill along 620 and it winds all the way down to metropolitan park road. The fence was erected to protect the preserve land. City of Austin has major influence over lake Austin, River Place and will eventually annex Steiner. It would be a large accomplishment overcoming the city of Austin to get this done. All the while the COA is still passing code to help protect lake Austin. Local groups have tried alleviating 620/2222 traffic by proposing alternate routes to Vandergrift and those have been shot down. Smaller projects like the right turn lane from 620 onto 2222 were changed because Walgreens complained about the negative effects it would have on their business. It would make far more sense to start chipping away at these smaller problems before going for the grand slam with this toll road which will only help bee caves and lakeway residents and leave Austin residents with potentially a worse situation.

Ive read several interviews that suggest the people proposing this plan know it will never happen. They are just trying to get on the radar of CAMPO and TXDOT.

Again, ain't ever going to happen.

"Elevated" doesn't change the fact that it would impact the preserve.

If you don't want conjestion, quit building houses off of 620.

It can be done. I'd imagine something similar to I-10 through the swamps in Louisiana. I still hope it never happens.
