Coming to Austin this month for Antiques Roadshow and wanted some recs for really good restaurants including those for Mexican food.

Wife and I like to go to Santa Rita for fajitas and margaritas. North of downtown a little ways, but the food is good.

Also, I was on a bowling team with the husband of the chef at El Alma. Haven't made it down there yet, but from hearing about his wife's cooking, it sounds pretty damn good.

FSM is my favorite interior Mexican Sunday brunch place. Great food! BOM is of course correct Tex-Mex fans might not appreciate it.

Just stand on any street corner and throw a rock. There's a good chance you'll hit a good Mexican restaurant. In addition to the ones listed above.

Gueros
Manuels
Serranos
Iron Cactus
Potcake

For Mexican:
Curra's

There are others for Tex-Mex

The only two times I ate at Matts, I got sick. Not very good IMHO.

Enchiladas Y Mas - This is a place for food not drinks. It's a small hole in the wall but really good food.
Habaneros - Same as Enchiladas Y Mas...this is prolly my favorite.

I'll never get why people list Matt's, Trudy's or Polvos. I'm assuming it's for the drinks & atmosphere because the food is NOT good. Trudy's is the worst of the 3 for food. Matt's is whatever & so is Polvos. I guess people like them b/c of stout drinks & social atmospheres.

I really like the stuffed avocado at Trudy's. Also the drinks and atmosphere help out quite a bit. Not to mention the kitchen is open late night.

I think that Matt's is just mentioned because it's an institution, not for any recent good food.

I think Maudie's, Trudy's and Matt's are insanely overrated. Go to the hole-in-the-walls for the best food, or FSM.

For very spicy hot delicious salsa and chips, and also the best puffy taco ever, go to Angie's. Also have great cheese enchiladas.

Tortilleria Rio Grande. If you're white, you'll be the only one there. Food, especially tortillas, is awesome.

La Cocina de Consuelo on Burnet is very good as well. Only seating for about 15 people.

Vivo on 620 is most definitely NOT still open. In fact, half of it has become Noble Pig.

I really like the fajitas at Morelias grill. Their salsa and charro beans are also superb. Can't speak for anything else there as that's all I usually get.

Always thought they were bland. I do like their salsa and green sauce. And their breakfast was top notch the short time they offered it. Other then that...meh.

Fresa, next door to Shoal Creek Saloon, has great chicken with sides and very good queso.

I wouldn't put Morelia's in my top 100 of Mexican restaurants in Austin area.

Morelia's is indeed the worst Mexican restaurant I have been to in the entire Austin area.

Curra's is my favorite.

I second Habaneros.
Amayas Taco Village I guess for more Tex-Mex. The place is always packed everytime I go (lunch).
Anyone Tried Gloria's downtown? It was decent and seemed to be more interior Mexican food, but I'm a gringo...what do I know.

I've only tried their breakfast tacos. I have no idea what their lunch/dinner is like. I only went once due to the lines. Granted it was right after they were featured on the food channel for the food competition.

Juan in a Million is my favorite "hand made" Mexican food place. Awesome.

The one time I've been to Juan in a Million was at the request of friends who were in town. Food was overly bland and not worth the wait. Haven't considered going back.

"Bland" it is, friends from NY love this place. I do appreciate that everything is made from scratch and the owner is cool.

Every place is bland to me though. Also with kids, I'm used to making it bland and adding flavor later. When we eat at Lupe Tortilla, I have the wife smuggle in sriracha sauce. Houston based "Tex-Mex" chains that make it to Austin are all bland, in my limited experience.
