A friend of mine called me today to let me know that her car's driver's side window was busted in today around one and her car was robbed.

Her car was sitting in a crowded Olive Garden parking lot in the middle of the day, right next to a busy highway! How does crap like this happen and how do the fools that do it get away?

I find it hard to believe that no one saw anything or heard the alarm going off...

Easy - -burglers are usually more observant of the general public, than the public is of others around them. They wait for the right time and bingo. Like I've said before, breaking into a car only takes seconds. The breaking glass makes almost no noise, especially next to the highway noise. Enter and grab - it is their profession. As far as the alarm - how many times have you been in a parking lot, heard a car alarm go off and then take time out of your day to find the vehicle? I would guess not many, if any. Not trying to bash you on that last observation. Just placing you with 99.5% of the population that are so used to car alarms sounding that they ignore them.

A car alarm gets my attention. Not enough to investigate the source of the noise, but enough to get me to at least glance over to see what set it off. Olive Garden is a fairly busy place. If I were a criminal, it wouldn't be my first target

Does Olive Garden have any parking lot security cameras? It's a shame that we have to constantly be on the alert for all the scum bags of society to not become a victim but that's the world we live in. Be careful though you don't want to stare to long because someone might take that as a sign of aggression, or whine about you "profiling" them.

Americans sleep peacefully in their beds at night knowing rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

... just a pet peeve of mine but car's can't be 'robbed' - they're burglarized.

Sorry for your friend's loss. Did she file a police report or anything? Not sure there are camera's at Olive Garden though so I don't know how much luck she'll have.

I was at Olive Garden today between noon and 1:30 p.m. The parking lot had lots of empty spaces when I got there and when I left. Glad they didn't hit my car.

I would doubt that there would be cameras at Olive Garden.

that sucks for your friend. its just good common sense to make sure that the seats are empty of anything valuable. i cant tell you how many times i go thru parking lots and see cameras, laptops, phones and purses in an unattended car.

Unless there was more than one it looks like she did file. Checked our significant activity report and we took a vehicle burg report in that area at 1:41 PM yesterday - purse and checkbooks stolen.

I think this is only because really dumb people eat at the Olive Garden... the people who saw it probably couldn't figure out what was going on.

That's nuts. Takes a big set to do something like that in the middle of the day in a crowded parking lot.

My only question is, why do people leave stuff like purses/valuables out in their cars? Even hidden, it's still in there and something potentially stolen. My mom had her purse stolen out of her car a couple of years ago. She went into a restaurant and left her purse in the car. After dragging her purse around with her all day while shopping, I don't know what the issue was with taking it in to one more place.

I agree with Burnet. I was walking into the mall yesterday and saw a credit card sitting in someone's cupholder. First thought was "what an idiot!"

Yes, she filed a police report of course. And actually, her purse was concealed under a blanket she said (the blanket was also taken). It was still probably conspicuous otherwise I doubt they would have busted the window in.

And if my use of the word "rob" in that context irritates you, try growing up in a community where people would say "Man, I like that hat, I'm gonna rob it."

it is entirely possible that the car alarm did not go off at all as many only respond to a door opening or a fairly significant jarring.
