I didn't know this...I thought the Northgate location was the original Freebirds. But the California location no longer exists, and corporate headquarters are in College Station.
Raising Cane's originated in Baton Rouge, and has more locations in Louisiana than everywhere else combined. Whether Todd Graves had eaten at Layne's, or even heard of it, before he founded Cane's is anyone's guess; but I don't see any reason to think he had. Wikipedia says it was founded in 1996; Layne's opened in 1994. (See
