Has anyone here ever noticed how many restaurants have come from this area and spread beyond Bryan-College Station into the State and The Nation?

Wings N Moore
Freebirds
Double Daves
Laynes (Copied by Rasing Canies which went Nation Wide)
and more.... What else is originally from BCS and has gone national?

Wings and Freebirds didn't start in B/CS. It might be a stretch to say that Raising Cane's was copied from Layne's.

Wasn't Jason's Deli started by a couple of Ags? If so, not sure the first location was here.

I think that Jason's Deli either started in Beaumont or Houston, I probably am wrong though.

Wings and Freebirds may not have had their first building here, but I would think thier success and foundation is directly related to their success here.

Jason's Deli started in Beaumont in 1976. They have been celebrating their 30 anniversary for several months.

the Pappas restaurants (Pappas, Pappasitos, Pappadeux, and whatever else is in that group) were started by an Ag, but I think he started them in Houston.

I'm confused about Raising Canes coping Lanes and going nationwide. I don't know how long they have been around but I know Raising Canes was in Baton Rouge around 2001 or 2002. Why would they wait so long to come to C/S if this is where they "copied" the idea.

From http://wingsnmore.com/aboutus.htm:
quote:
Wings 'N More restaurants have been operating in the Texas market since 1986. The first two restaurants were opened in the Houston area in 1986

From http://freebirds.com/slow/faq.htm:
quote:
The first Freebirds opened in Santa Barbara, California, in 1987. The first Freebirds in Texas opened in College Station in 1990.

I didn't know this...I thought the Northgate location was the original Freebirds. But the California location no longer exists, and corporate headquarters are in College Station.

Raising Cane's originated in Baton Rouge, and has more locations in Louisiana than everywhere else combined. Whether Todd Graves had eaten at Layne's, or even heard of it, before he founded Cane's is anyone's guess; but I don't see any reason to think he had. Wikipedia says it was founded in 1996; Layne's opened in 1994. (See http://www.raisingcanes.com/OurHistory.pdf and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raising_Cane's_Chicken_Fingers.)

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason's_Deli:
quote:
Jason's Deli started in 1976 in Beaumont, Texas by Joe Tortorice. The original location is still in operation at the Gateway Shopping Center.

Couldn't find any history on jasonsdeli.com, but if Wikipedia says it, it must be true, right?

Quit with the "Canes copied Laynes" garbage. They're two chicken finger places that happen to have rhyming names. There's only so much you can do with chicken fingers, and there are probably 5,000 different chicken finger companies with restaurants in the US. It's not a unique idea.

seems like a pretty unique signature sauce....

Not really. Crazy Cajuns has a similar sauce for dipping crawfish in, and they didn't get the idea for it from Laynes or Caines.

It's a sauce served a lot of places in Louisiana, where Caines originated.

Both Layne's and Cane's are copies of a chain called Zaxby's that is in the southeast, mainly Georgia. The original owner of Layne's (not Mike) will tell you that.

Joe Tortorice is an old Ag, class of sixty-something. His son is class of ninety-something. Nice family, great business. Joe was born and raised in the Beaumont area, AFAIK.

Southcutt -

The Freebirds in CA isn't affiliated with the TX brand. It still exists (last I checked).

Because I've eaten sauce very similar to that in multiple places.

It's good stuff, but not very hard to make at all.
