So I was supposed to show up for jury duty thing or at least go and tell them that I am busy with school, but I forgot all about it.

So has this happened to anyone in Brazos Co?

I really dont have any money at all to pay a fine and Id prefer not to go to jail .. but it seems that these are the options within the law.

Im curious as to what is typical around here and if Id be able to skate for being a student.

I really doubt it and Id really appreciate no smartass responses, but I will undoubtedly get some.

If you had class the day you were summoned you had a valid excuse. That being said, I'm not sure what happens if you don't send in the excuse form.

This happened to me earlier in the year in my county back home.

They told me there was enough people to make the jury so it wasn't that big of a deal, just don't let it happen again.

You are in BIG trouble. I'm not a lawyer but I could handle the situation for $50.

Seriously though,

I showed up on time for a JP jury duty and only those who showed up early were needed, they didn't even have us check in or anything.

I doubt they would even check "the list" unless they didn't have enough show up.

Well thanks everyone, I am going to go there in the morning and talk with them and make sure that everything is ok.

I remembered that I got the summons form, but it got lost amongst my schoolwork and I remembered about it tonight and I was sad to find out that it was for last Friday.

Anyhow .. thanks for no ribbing, I was worried about this, I dont like to deal with the law.

You're completely exempt as a student. It's unlikely anyone will care, but next time just send the form back in with the exemption filled out.

Call them and tell them you forgot. Reschedule another time.

Every once in awhile a judge will get fed up with too many no-shows and decide it's time to teach the public a lesson, in which case you'll see something like this:

The vast majority of the time, though, you're completely fine. If you call the courthouse they'll probably re-schedule you.

they cannot actually prove you recieved the summons in the mail.

No big deal. I have forgotten several times and nothing has ever happened.

I got a summon right after I put my name on the electoral role in 1995, I didnt even have a car back then, but there was this option of getting off for students, so I did that. Whew.

One time when I had jury duty in Brenham very few of us showed up. The judge directed the bailiff to issue arrest warrants for the no-shows.

But, like I said, that was only once.

Better not to mess with the law. IF you forgot, I suggest the best thing is to call them and reschedule. If the judge hears the whole story, he might be sympathetic.
