Not a bad idea, actually. Bill Fitch was a little rough around the edges, but definitely a hard worker, "doer", visionary and leader.

I heard there is some support to name it after Lawrence Sullivan Ross. Not a bad idea either.

Well if you're going to do it, you'd better get the form in to me soon. Official last day to submit was monday, but the City Manager has asked us to extend due to the coverage on KBTX last night.....

But here is the deal, this isn't like an internet poll, Council will pick the name, and it wont necessarily be the one that gets the most submissions. It will be the one they vote on as most appropriate. So submitting one with the reasoning "he's the man" probably wont carry as much weight as would a submission with information like Aggie 99 posted.... And rude or obscene reasons never get past my desk....

I've received over 550 submissions so far....

Elsie,
I am stunned to hear that so many suggestions were submitted. I wasn't expecting more than fifty. That's pretty cool news!

Never meant to make it an Internet poll.....just raising awareness (for the project, and for who Mr. Fitch was).

Aggie99... I totally understood that when I posted, but you know how "TexAg"ers can get when they scent an internet poll for them to win at.... I have to type all of these in and prepare a report for Council, so I appreciate serious and sincere entries like yours. Have you officially entered it? We've reposted the form on our website www.cstx.gov if you haven't. The report will go to Council on Thursday of next week.

In 1995, the cities of College Station and Bryan jointly proclaimed April 12, 1995, as "Bill Fitch Appreciation Day." In an interview with a local newspaper reporter, he was asked how he felt about his many accomplishments. Never one to appear boastful, he responded by saying, "Do you know how to tell if someone is important? If they stick their finger in a cup of coffee, and it leaves a hole, then they're important." When he died two years later, he left a hole in the Brazos Valley.

Travis Bryan, Jr., chairman of the board of the First National Bank, said "He was dreamer who made all his dreams come true. He was really responsible for the growth of College Station. It think he really was 'Mr. College Station'."

At the time of his death in 1997, the Eagle Editorial Board published an editorial titled "Bill Fitch was truly Mr. College Station." The article stated in part, "Not only was Bill Fitch a man of vision. He was also a man of service. He donated land for schools and churches and city parks because he knew thay are important to the quality of life in any city. He never waivered from his goal of a better College Station for everyone. Through it all, Bill Fitch remained kind, polite and friendly. He showed great respect for everyone he came in contact with.
"He will be missed. No one should drive down one of College Station's busy streets or through one of its great neighborhoods and not think of him. Be thankful he lived here and cared so much about our community. His vision helped shape College Station into the wonderful place it has become."

New road to be named for Bill Fitch

By APRIL AVISON
Eagle Staff Writer

Described by his peers as a visionary, a College Station developer who built many of the city's roads soon will have one named in his honor.

A 3-mile stretch of Texas 40 connecting Earl Rudder Freeway South and Wellborn Road will be named for W.D. "Bill" Fitch when it opens in early summer, College Station officials recently announced.

The one-time College Station City Council and school board member developed Southwest Parkway and the Southwood Valley subdivision during the 1960s and 1970s, a time when some people believed College Station wouldn't grow enough to support that development.

While Fitch died in 1997 at the age of 75, his legacy lives on: He created Southwood Valley Inc., a development company, in 1973, buying land throughout the city and donating much of it for schools, parks and churches.

Pete Normand, a retired developer and Fitch's son-in-law, was one of more than 100 people who asked the College Station City Council to name a road for Fitch.

"Time and again, whenever he jumped out there and did something, people thought he was nuts," Normand said. "Now we look back and say, 'Well of course we needed Southwest Parkway.'"

The College Station City Council collected suggestions in a "Name That Road" contest and received 700-plus entries. More than 100 people submitted Fitch's name, according to the city's public information office. The only name that received more recommendations than Fitch's was Texas A&M University basketball Coach Billy Gillispie, who got 186 nominations.

Other suggestions in the road-naming contest included the late Dr. O.C. Cooper, actor Chuck Norris, singer Lyle Lovett, former Texas A&M football player Dat Nguyen and former First Lady Barbara Bush.

The City Council voted 3-1 last week to name the road for Fitch. Councilman John Happ cast the only dissenting vote, saying he didn't think it was fair to make a decision while three council members - Mayor Ron Silvia, Chris Scotti and Ben White - were absent.

"Bill Fitch is the type of visionary that we should all hold up as an example," said Councilman Ron Gay. "Even if you go through times when people are laughing at you, keep daring to dream, and that's what Bill Fitch did. You cannot take away from the fact that the city we live in today would not be what it is without Bill Fitch."

There was a slight error in that article. Actually the entire road from Wellborn Road to Hwy 30 (New Hwy 40 AND Greens Prairie East will be the William D. Fitch Hwy. April only mentioned the new road.

That, and they decided, for whatever reason, to run the story a week after the council named it for Fitch. Yeah...late...

So the Pebble Creekers now will now live off of Fitch Hwy rather than Greens Prairie?

Or is it just an "overlay" thing like on HWY 6 / Rudder Freeway / Veterans Memorial Hwy / East Bypass?

Also, does that mean that Greens Prairie west will remain Greens Prairie with no name change?

It is my understanding that the name Greens Prairie East will go away. Greens Prairie west will remain the same for now, until further development requires the change of either Greens Prarie Road or Greens Prairie TRAIL (which is what you get on when you go straight through the four way stop sign towards the west end.

The problem was that the two sides of Greens Prairie Road no longer meet. What is currently GPE is now a continuous road with Hw40.

Although the Eagle article had a few errors, it was nice of them to run the picture as well. That picture was kindly supplied to our office by Mr. Fitch's daughter.
