Does anyone still work at the actual Eagle newspaper building in Bryan? I have been trying to cancel a subscription for an elderly relative and the phone is forwarded to Waco and no one ever answers any of the departments. On-line cancellation doesn't work either. Just wondering.

Document it and just notify your card or bank to not accept any charges.
I work across the street with a window that looks out over The Eagle building. They haven't hung the US or Texas flags since covid and I can't remember the last time someone parked in the lot in front and accessed the front door. It's truly a ghost town over there.

Just dispute it with the card company.
That's what I did. Seemed to be the best way to get the account closed.
What a shame. I remember when that place was hopping early every morning. My how times have changed.
This makes me sad.
I miss the days of going out and getting the Eagle and the Chronicle.
The Saturday morning Eagle during the fall was a lot of fun to read.

When we did the addition and additional press back 8 years or so ago, they had been bought by Berkshire Hathaway and we were told they were moving to being a printing facility primarily . It was weird they were greatly expanding printing capabilities while simultaneously laying off media staff.

Well I bet the Waco staff is minimal. It took 2 days to finally talk to a live person.
Their voicemail says call 6:30am to 3:30pm but the lady said they don't drag in until after 8.

Sunday Eagle was great after an Aggie win.
There are people who still work there. Employees always parked in the rear. The actual newspaper staff is minimal. However the printing side has more employees. The business exists on printing other people's newspapers. I heard on the radio last week that Eagle prints the Fort Star Telegram. I know all the small town weekly papers in surrounding counties get printed there. Probably more larger papers I don't know about.
Years ago Buffet identified that paper itself was dead but the business could make money printing other people's papers. It won't last forever but it lasted long enough for him to get out.

I believe Lee Enterprises out of Atlanta bought the Eagle around Covid time and it's been downhill ever since. It's only printed 3 times a week now but online version is available daily. Don't know why I continue my online subscription as KBTX and WTAW have more and better local news outside of sports. The articles are more general in topics in medicine or travel or such, and all of the national news comes from your liberal slanted news sources. Oh, and if you miss one of their articles today, don't worry as it will be repeated in a couple of days. The online version averages 20-30 pages per day but takes about 30 seconds to read anything of interest because there's not much there unless it's am Aggie sports topic. Don't follow high school sports in the Eagle though. The football scores aren't reported until Monday usually. But if you want to know about hockey, you've got a full page everyday during hockey season. Really sad what has happened to a once good newspaper.
The Eagle was amazing in the 90s! We used to love to walk across the street to have lunch at Oxford Street. They went woke and went broke.

Just because it rhymes doesn't mean it's true - I do miss Oxford Street though.
I think the community could support a paper even in this digital age, but the greedy corporate owners literally did everything possible to ruin it . It was the moves made by Lee that ticked off every long-term subscriber and made them gatekeep local news behind a paywall. I do believe that news should be paid for, but that horse was out of the barn a long time ago, and they are literally dying on that hill .

It's been a slow transition to more trusted national newspapers like the Wall Street Journal for broader daily news. Local news is consumed via TexAgs which serves as a curated source for topics of interest.

Sadly that's about the size of it. Part of a national trend though of small town newspapers dropping like flies. Lots of reasons (I know some media folks who research this stuff) and all sorts of consequences.

They also cut down the newspaper itself. Remember when it had sections on food, gardening, and entertainment?

I periodically get calls from their subscription "department" to restart my subscription. Pretty sure its an overseas call center- no one ever speaks English as a native language and their names are always "Karen", "Judy", "Susan", "Dave", or "Robert".

The Eagle got caught in the same trap as a lot of other mid-size papers which was having to do stuff the old way to keep making what money they were making but doing so limited their potential to pivot for the future so you end up just slowly riding a sinking ship into the sea.
This would have been pretty extreme and would have cost them money in the short term, but I think they should have stopped covering A&M sports years ago and focused on being THE place for regional high school sports. Message boards, podcasts, team coverage, etc. Basically a TexAgs for Brazos Valley sports. Send photographers to as many games as possible, sell ads on team-specific subsites, etc, etc. One thing that will never change is parents/grandparents/whoever love reading about their kids.

I think you are exactly right. Took me less than one minute to scan through my 35 page online version of the Eagle this morning. It's the last thing I read every morning and I'd already read the national news that I was interested in somewhere else and probably from a source that I trust more than Reuters, AP, Texas Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Detroit News, etc, that are the Eagle's sources. I am looking for local news and high school sports fits that category big time since I have grandkids in that age group. But hey, if want hockey news when their season starts, get the Eagle -- a full page of professional hockey coverage every day!!

LOL! The Eagle doesn't even carry most of the obits any longer. Obits have become expensive and many folks choose not to publish them any longer, so now days the old folks just check the funeral home websites. You probably ask now me how I know? I regularly check 6-7 different funeral home websites. When you have them bookmarked, it's real easy to scroll down them.

Even taking the quality of wire news out of the picture, it takes people, time and money to put those stories in the actual paper (or the website or wherever else). Forget it.
They do it because most of the subscriber base, especially 10-20 years ago, are older folks who want the national news in the printed paper, so you don't want to lose the subscribers you do have, but that's what I mean about riding a sinking ship all the way down. Small to midsize papers are so beholden to the money that they're currently making from a dying model to be able to change it.

The Batt is the best local paper and it's not even close.
I understand what you are saying but when we use the term "older", I think we are talking about"real old" folks. I am 70+ and my friends are like me, we don't read the newspaper for national news. If we are talking old as being 85+, that ship is stern up and sinking real fast!!
Well that's why I said especially 10-20 years ago. That population that was floating the newspaper industry is quickly declining.
