I don't have a sub to The Eagle and saw a link to an article about the death of Jeff Watson yesterday. Former A&M Consolidated and Baylor QB. He was 50 years old. Anyone with a sub read the article and know what happened? Way too many former college players are dying before they reach middle age.

Article just says he died in his sleep , autopsy would be performed and foul play not suspected.

He was an absolute elite athlete. He literally coulda been a 3 sport guy if he wanted to and if a football scholarship wasn't in play for him. Rest in peace #7.
I remember his recruitment and that I was disappointed he ended up at Baylor and not A&M. He had a nice career at Baylor.

Former Consol quarterback Watson is remembered
I watched alot of Consol football back in those days with Jeff at QB.
Play that sticks out the most to me I remember was in the 1992 State Championship game in the Astrodome.
Consol was going for back to back state titles, playing Waxahachie.
Consol starting running back was injured on the opening kickoff, so Jeff was inserted on the kickoff return team to take his spot. Midway thru the 4th quarter Waxahachie went up 20-17 and on ensuing kickoff Watson returned the kick 90+ yards for a TD to retake the lead. Watson wasnt known for his speed and Waxahachie team speed was ridiculous, but on that kickoff return he outran everybody on the field.
Waxahachie would go on to win 28-24 to deny Consol back to back State Championships, but that moment is one I have always remembered.
Jeff was a football player. He had a knack for making big plays especially with the game on the line.
HS football means alot to a lot of people and the run Consol went on in the late 80's - early/mid 90's which was unprecedented in Texas High School football at the time was very special to alot of people in this community. Jeff Watson was a big, big part of that run.

One of my JW remenrences is in the Dome against LaMarque. Console was winning convincingly, and Jeff took a knee to let time run out. LaMarque called time out. Jeff threw a pass to the middle of the field for a quick fifteen yards, then took another knee. LaMarque folded.
I've got a Baylor hat signed by him somewhere in storage. Might be one of my first ever autographs. He was the reason I had that hat at all.

Didn't he get faster by the time he graduated? Thought I remember being at a track meet where he was running the 100m or 200m around 92 or 93. It was him and 7 black dudes. When he won, all the black girls in the stands went off on their friends that had just lost. Calling them every name in the book, questioning their manhood, "you lost to a white boy," etc. Watson didn't say a word. Just smiled. Funniest thing I'd ever seen on a track.

Tommy Preston (another phenomenal athlete) was QB in 89-90; Watson was the QB 91-93 seasons. I watched probably 95% of those games from 89-92.
Consol was 67-8 those five years. Beyond belief considering how bad Consol was prior to that.
Both those guys were/could have been all district (or better) in baseball/basketball/football

Rogers also assembled a helluva coaching staff at his Consol stop. Most notably Tim Buchanan who became a high school coaching legend in his own right and Mike Mullins too who also went on to have a long distinguished career.
I witnessed a lot of games during the great run by Rogers. Watson had a lot of moxie as the Consol QB. He was a fiery competitor and was the heart of the team. I was hoping that he would go to A&M because of how much he reminded me of former A&M QB Bucky Richardson (also #7). He was a bit too small to get an offer from A&M I guess. Had a solid career at Baylor, tho.
Jeff had a brother Jayson that played WR on the team. Jayson was a 4.5 guy and was much faster than Jeff.

November 26, 1992. Jeff and I were invited by the horns to the A&M-ut game in Austin. We were seated at the top row of the recruit section, with some rows of sip fans behind us. The hostess that was assigned to us for the game made the mistake of telling the fans behind us that we were from College Station. Boy did the fun start there!
If you knew Jeff, he could trash talk with the biggest **** eating grin on his face that would make you die laughing. So for four quarters, as the Ag's beat the ever living hell out of the sips that night, Jeff made sure to turn around every chance he got and remind those fans how much they really hated College Station. At the end of the game, as it was time to walk back towards the sip locker room with the rest of the recruits, Jeff turns and looks at them and says "F this place, I never wanted to be a longhorn in the first place" (we really did just use their invite to go to the game, the Ag's were shooting to be #1 in the nation). Didn't sit well with the recruiting coordinator or our host. He hated the sips as much as any Ag.
That day is one of my favorite memories with him. Today has been tough. He was my good friend. We knew each other since the 5th grade. We played together every year even through my one short year at Baylor before transferring to A&M. Football camps, recruiting trips, riding bikes around the neighborhood when we were younger, or whatever weekend shenanigans we all got into. He was a great friend to many, a leader, and a father. He will be missed.

One of the greatest High School football games I have ever witnessed. A 36-34 La Marque win at Pasadena memorial Stadium to end consol's season at 12-2. La Marque went on to beat Calallen in the Semifinals the next week and then lost the State Championship to Stephenville led by Art Briles and Brandon Stewart at QB. Consol moved to 5A for the 1994 season and La Marque won 4A State titles in 1995,1996 and 1997.

#78, our inside linebacker, is Trey Zuhn's dad. The TD at 6:30 was caught by Troy Walters, yes, our former Coach Walters. "Killer" is what our trainer named him after he damn near killed a dude on a crack back block earlier that year. Jeff and I ended up next to each other on that play after he threw it (I am #61) and both turned and looked at each other and said we scored too quick. We both knew it was over right then. LaMarque's RB, Byron Evans, ended up going to Minnesota. He was a stud. I also believe former A&M LB Roylin Bradley was on that LaMarque team, he would have been a freshman.
And for the record, that field sucked.

Also, the first Texas high school football dynasty was probably Paul Tyson's Waco High. The first Texas high school football championship was played in 1920. From 1921 to 1927, Waco High had 58 shutouts and their only loss was to Abilene 3-0 in 1923. They won 4 titles in. that stretch. Since this run began the year after the first championship game, I'd say it's the first dynasty.
Abilene and Odessa Permian and many others built dynasties long before Consol had their run.
Just curious, has anyone seen what he happened to have passed from? Being just 50, was just wondering.
LaMarque was coached by Alan Weddell who would later serve as a linebackers coach under R.C.

- Advance to at least the State Semifinals for 4 consecutive seasons
Yeah there were other dynasties before the Consol run but none matched what Consol did . They were the first in UIL history to accomplish those feats
