Off day at Shipley's?

It's been a few months since I've had Shipley's so I decided to grab some kolaches and donuts for the family from the one on Fitch. I remember the donuts being fluffy and airy. What we got today was pretty disappointing.

The sausage used in the kolaches was tough and the donut dough was pretty dense. Afterwords we all had a bad aftertaste in our mouths. Just not what we remembered.

I know corporate got sold to yet another private equity firm last year. Was this an off day or is this the new PE ownership starting to ensh**ify the product? Anyone have the same experience?

And don't get pedantic about the word "kolache". No one actually cares.

I don't frequent that location, but I generally keep in mind the time of morning and I always go in just to see what is actually left and if we are getting drinks of any kind, especially the ones that are close to the expiration date.

That being said, we have about as many donut shops as we do chicken joints here. I do love shipleys when I get the feeling, but Karma and Kai's are very good also.

We get stuff there almost every Saturday and never had any issues.

It depends on the location . Most of the Houston area ones have the bigger more airy glazed. I've noticed our local ones while still tasty (imo) are more shrunken/deflated.

We go to that location about twice a month. No complaints with the donuts but they're often out of the bacon, egg, cheese and the bold kolaches which are the best ones. The sausage does seem to have taken a down turn. And the employees consistently mess up the kolache order.

Shipleys, all local locations, remind me of what Freebird's became over time. They aren't hiring anyone if they don't have multiple piercings, tattoos, and if they can speak clearly and not mumble.

It's bizarre. Like a halfway house hiring talent pool, with a couple of exceptions.

And a few of them act bothered to have you order something and have to sell it to you and complete a transaction. Like they are too good to be interrupted.

It's not what it once was.

Lol. We go through the drive-thru on Fitch every Saturday and Sunday. The folks that take our order are always polite, fast, and we haven't noticed any change in the quality of the food.

But you're right. There is no such thing as a sausage kolache

Following the acquisition, I ceased my visits to Shipleys. My new favorite is Karma Kolache located on Wellborn Rd.

Shipley kolaches are basically hot dogs. They are good when fresh, but garbage otherwise

Exactly. I go to shipleys for the donuts and cinnamon twists. I don't ever have the urge to go just to get one of their hot dog kolaches. Would go to Karma on university and get one and maybe a spicy boudain one also.

I thought the local Shipley's were not part of that acquisition?

You are indeed correct. The "brand" has been acquired. Therefore, does this mean that the franchise is free to produce the donuts their way, or is it akin to a McDonald's franchise?

I always assumed it was because of the difficulty finding employees who would work those hours.

I feel like the kolache bread changed a few years ago. Def more dense now.

Kiddo ate at two different ones in Austin this summer and said they were both trash.

As an aside, the new Shipley's in the Walmart lot at 2818 & W. Villa Maria is now open.

I go in that location a decent amount. You're spot on about then types of people they hire. I had one reach over the reader and take my card out of my hands as I was using the card reader. I guess I didn't do it how he liked it. I had a feeling he may have been special needs so I didn't make a big deal out of it but it was awkward.

I've never used the drive through, only gone in. It seems like they put all hands on deck for the drive through so when you actually do go in it always feels like someone is going out of their way to check you out.

Karma on Wellborn is the way to go. Helen is the hardest working person in Brazos County. And a sweetheart.

Rotate between Karma and Shipley's on Greens Prairie. Always had a great experience at both.

I DO prefer Karma, especially if you want anything savory.

The Shipleys here need to get onboard with the others outside of B/CS and make a chocolate glazed plain twist. I like the Shipleys in Waller when we have to go to Katy or Tomball for baseball because they have them. Heck even the Donald Donuts by Consol always has 2 or 3 in their case. Just a personal preference
