Driving around town, they are in full bloom right now. Don't recall ever seeing so many in the landscape and seeing them bloom so profusely. They were popular back in the day but people forgot about them for a few decades until about 15 years ago.
Love the deep purple color.
I have 3 in my landscape and I love them. Very hardy for the Texas climate around here, even more so than crepe myrtles.
Recommend them in your landscape for hardiness and color in the late spring and also the fall.

Any plant native to Afghanistan is likely hardy. I don't find them too invasive but they will sprout up where you throw branches away here if you don't burn them.

I planted two tiny ones (basically sticks) back in November. They're about 18" now and one of them has its first flower.

They reseed like mad. I have a love/hate relationship with mine. It is beautiful but creates a lot of work.

My 5ish year old Vitex, absolutely love them. Last year, they did not bloom and i thought i screwed them up somehow, but they came back absolutely beautiful this year.

Does the purple part fall off and or blow off in wind? Would they be good near a pool or no?

I don't think you would have any issues with polluting of a pool. Saying that, i have never owned a pool.

The tree on the right in my picture would be considered a pool polluting nightmare

Yes, you will have some crud in the pool from blooms.. That being said, it isnt as bad as having Texas Sage. Neighbor has sage around his pool and he hates it.

When vitex drop leaves in the fall, it will be the worst time of year.

We have 2 in our backyard that are over 20 years old. They are beautiful right now. There are also a whole bunch of them on the backside of Premiere Cinema on AC Parkway.

There is a little bit of chaff when the blooms fall off. Bees love them so do not plant where bee-allergic or fearful people will be. I would not plant by a pool though because of the seeds. Thousands fall off the tree from fall to spring. I have them near a gravel path. I am going to try to shop vac them up this year because blowing them out has been impossible. They sprout happily though the gravel and in between the driveway concrete cracks and in the flower beds 50 feet away. They are lovely shrubs, perfect for highway medians.

Where can I buy a couple of these? How much water do they need? Thinking about putting a couple out in the yard but in an area not currently on irrigatioin.

I'm fairly certain I saw some at the CS Lowes last weekend. It might be worth giving Farm Patch a call.

If you are worried about drought, try a desert willow. Fewer messy months because the blossoms drop but not a million hard seeds. I have desert willow, wax myrtle, crepe myrtle and vitex listed from hardiest in my yard and my favorite to least favorite. Wax myrtle is evergreen if that is of importance to you.

Most nurseries have them most of the time now.

Fun fact I learned from a vendor at the farm market: they produce little fruits once called "chaste berries." Religious clerics used them to suppress the male "urges."

Actually it was used for the female condition. Not male. Still used for various female problems in naturopathy.

Speaking of an oldie.....don't see near as many Mimosa trees in the area as there were 30-40 years ago.
The few that I've seen around here are currently in full bloom tho and are beautiful.
Seeing most of them in abandoned homesteads while I'm driving down the highway to Houston the past couple of weeks.
Have always loved their blooms.
Why are they not more popular?

They are messy, invasive, and often only live about 30 years.

I still love them and I'm glad my neighbor has one I can look at without dealing with all the mess.

Granny had one when I was growing up in her front yard, and I wish I had neighbors with one.

We had one on the back of our property in Hitchcock. I loved that tree.

Farm Patch has the purple ones in.

Has anyone seen any of the pink vitex for sale in the area?
