Have a good family friend that has suffered a serious stroke, and looking for any recommendations from others that have already walked this path with a loved one, as to any skilled facilities that are good with stroke recovery, especially in the area of speech therapy?

Trying to stay in the B/CS area, but if you have any great experiences in the surrounding areas as well (i.e. more towards Houston, etc.), I'd appreciate to hear about your positive (or negative, i.e. "stay away from") recommendations...thanks in advance!

St. Joseph , in my opinion, has a great program.

Facilities were clean. Staff was above par and worked hard to get my family member going in the right direction.

Therapy is 100% priority with no excuses or delays.

First and foremost I would try and get them in to Encompass Inpatient Rehab at the St Joe's Rehab Hospital. They will get 3 hours of therapy a day for probably 6 days/week up to 20 days.

After that, the SNFs that I would consider would be Crestview, Five Points, and Legacy (listed in no particular order). I base these recommendations on knowing the therapy staff in these buildings but don't know how nursing care is.

Medicare changed the rules for therapy services provided in SNFs 5 years ago so therapy there will be a lot less as compared to Inpatient Rehab. Probably anywhere from 1-2 hours/day depending on how many therapies are involved with the patient.
