Unless Texas is one of the few states allowing for ID/DL on your phone you will still need your wallet for certain purchases.

I think the real game changer is just having groceries delivered to your house and not having to step inside a grocery store at all. The milkman was ahead of his time.

More than ready for this. I just bought a new car and my phone is my car key so if Texas can get behind DL and LTC on the phone then it's one less thing I have to carry. Or more specifically one less thing I have to forget when I leave the house.

Edit: as of June of this year Texas isn't one of these states.

Call me Captain VHS, but I don't want my phone to have that much influence in my daily life. A little bit, like this post, is ok. More than that, trouble ahead.

If you are ok with Apple (a tech company, not regulated by Office of the Comptroller of the Currency) monitoring every purchase, then OK go right ahead and use Apple Pay.

People have no idea how much privacy and security they are giving away with today's devices and services.

There are even services to purchase your data and track your daily routine due to GPS on cell phones and store shopping habits.

Your not alone, I have been moving back to a more analog life style. Paper note taking/Remarkable notepad (still electronic) as an example.

My latest move is away from the current cell phones to something more basic.

Personally, I feel my life is unhealthy with the constant bombardment of various communication tools.

How does Apple having that data differ from Citibank having that data? If you're using credit or debit cards for your day to day life you aren't able to maintain privacy from the banks or tech companies regarding your activity. To this point we haven't seen Apple shift to an advertising based revenue model like we see from Google and Amazon so at least that's a good thing. I'm sure there's something I'm missing in how Apple can monetize that data but I don't see it impacting my life in any way so I guess I'm fine with it. I do no social media other than TexAgs so their ability to sell it to someone that can use it is extremely limited.

This I agree with. I've taken a bit of a different approach to disconnecting from the constant bombardment of communication but I'm with you one the need to. TexAgs rolling out the mobile app has been great for me as I actually spend less time on the site than I used to. I don't do any other social media but my days are a constant barrage of calls and texts and emails from clients and the people that exist in their world and need my help. My phone only allows notifications from text and phone calls. The rest are blocked from all apps.

What I've done is segregate my world into different devices expressly so I can get away from the notifications. My phone ringer is almost always turned off. I use an iPhone and a Mac and those are pretty strongly in tune with each other but when I need to leave them behind I can and do. I use a remarkable for note taking primarily because it's a single device that replaced the 15 or so legal pads I had, one for each client. I don't check my email outside of a 7am session to clear the overnight stuff and a late day session to clear the stuff that came in during the day. I leave my phone in my office for meals and time with my wife and the kids when they're around and the Mac only leaves my desk for specific situations. Lastly I read a lot of novels and do so on a Kindle that doesn't ring or ding or ping so it's a way to tune the world out entirely.

I do look forward to a world where I can leave it all behind entirely but that world doesn't currently exist so erecting walls to minimize the distractions is the best I can do.

City bank is regulated by government financial agencies, Congress has oversight of these agencies (for better or worse). Apple pay is regulated my individual state agencies and varies from state to state.

Thinking that you are "protecting your privacy" by not paying with your phone is just naive in today's technological advancement.

if you have a phone, and even if you turn of "Location Services" you can still be tracked by the government. Even if you turn it off.

You have no privacy and you are only making your life harder by trying to fight it with the examples given above that are trying to protect.

The bell has been rung, and you can't un-ring it.

I know not everybody trusts Apple, but at least they are doing it in a way that's end-end encrypted. Just like with plastic only you, the merchant, and the creidtor/bank get the full transaction details. Apple gets generic transaction data not associated with any user for "improving Apple Pay."

The difference is nobody can swipe/copy your magnetic stripe or NFC and use it without you like they can with a physical card or card #s.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/101554

Google's is a different animal, who knows who they sell that data to.

Normally I intentionally choose less tech where I can too, but this is one where I'll use it over my real cards every time for the added security.

Yep. I was told last week by a manager of an internet marketing company that when you receive a call and no one is on the line, all the are doing is checking to see if a real person answers the phone. If so, you and you phone # goes in a data base and the information is sold to many marketing companies.

Brave New World.

I've heard this before. I've actually been told the best thing to do is answer and don't say anything. Not sure what the truth is. The volume of spam calls and junk emails is staggering. Like most people I don't usually answer an unknown call and when they do catch me I'm generally pretty rude as I tell them not to call me again.

That is all fine and good but Apple is not a bank. It is not providing the money. FYI, if you are using Apple's credit card, Goldman Sachs is the bank and they are regulated as such.

Apple is simply a payment processor. If you swipe your Citibank card at HEB, your payment is processed through a processing company, effectively connecting HEB and Citibanks computers. In all likelihood, you have no idea what processing company HEB or any other merchant is using. And the bank may have a different one. At least if you are using Apple Pay, you know who is communicating the data between HEB and your bank.

When you pay through Apple, your credit card is encrypted unlike when you use your credit card at the counter. It's safer.

WRONG.
The only non encrypted card sessions is using swipe and the only unencrypted part of that is the bitstream between the mag strip reader and the processor. Modern chip and tap cards even that interface encrypted.
I spent years dealing with security of systems including payment cards for one of the largest multinational banking companies.

It's not that your card is encrypted with Apple Pay. As noted everyone uses encryption. Apple changes your card number so that your card info isn't transmitted but rather the number they sign to your card. Then each of your cards in your wallet has a different number.

Not sure what the benefits are from using Apple Pay, but I use my SWA Chase credit card for everything I can including elect bill, car payments, fuel, groceries, medicine, etc, etc. We typically get enough points to get three to four free flights in the U.S. every year. Our next free trip is to Vegas in mid-January to go to the Eagles concert at The Sphere. The travel and two nights stay at Trump Hotel there are "paid" by SWA points.

Just got back from Ouray, CO and the points paid the airline cost.

I pay the balance on the card every week or two before the end of each month so there is no interest charge.

We've been doing that for many years.

You can use your SWA Chase credit card with Apple Pay. Add it to your Apple wallet. The main security benefit is as has been stated, when you pay, you're exposing a token rather than the card number in the encrypted stream. But it's also darn convenient when I go to Walgreens and pay my bill using my Apple watch instead of having to pull out my card or phone. It's not life changing, but I dig it.

Thats dumb luck for sure. It seems to have gotten better in recent years but I had a stretch in 2008-2010 where I had at least one card per quarter compromised. I had one stolen and its replacement stolen less than 90 days later. It has gotten better though.
