Curious to know what it's like living in the area.

If you don't live here already, it is terrible. Don't come.

If you do live here, the new people are the problem.

When school is out the place is really great. No traffic jams, you can get into your favorite place to eat, even the staff at Lowe's and HD are friendly & helpful, etc..

I think it is a great place to raise a family. Schools overall are really good. Most neighborhoods are good. Good mix of stores, but options an hour a way if you need more. "Traffic" isn't bad. I usually try not to use the traffic word, as I used to live in Houston, so that was traffic.

Not sure there is much bad, at least in my view. I do sometimes wish there were more things to do as a family that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, but it is what it is.

The only big negative that I've experienced is the gerrymandering by the CSISD school board.

They cared more about perception than what was good for the students.

We have all the amenities that normally only large million person plus metro areas have, without the size and people that come with it.

We have major sporting venues in all types of sports. We have high quality arts programming (BVSO, OPAS). There are a ton of places to eat with a fair amount of diversity.

We are an hour to 90 minutes away with relatively easy travel from 2 massive metro areas where you can get anything you need that isn't in town, including 2 large airports that can get you anywhere you need to go. If you lived in Katy you would still travel an hour to IAH.

If you are 25-40 and single, it sucks.
If you are married with a family, it is paradise.

This.

As someone who grew up in BCS then went to college here it was great. Once I graduated and was still single it was a big bummer. Now that I have a wife and two young kids, it's where I want to come back to raise them.

This. Our kid going to Consol will have traveled over 4,000 mi farther than the oldest, who
went to CSHS, over the course of 4 years. 4,032 mi to be exact.

If they don't re-draw the lines again before the last two graduate, the family will have traveled +12,000 mi farther to go to HS than they should have. Just stupid.

This should be absolutely unacceptable. Waste of time and money. As well as the safety concern of unnecessarily putting new drivers in the traffic melee. Traffic is a bigger and bigger problem every year. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Probably? High school students who live three block NORTH of Consol go the College station high and student who live down Wellborn road around MIllican Reserves go to Consol.

Same with middle school. Student who live aroud F&B road go the the middle school near Wellborn rather than the one on George Bush and then the students who live in Peach Creek at the southern edge of the city go to the George Bush location middle school.

It almost appears that there is an effort to make things difficult so that some parents will send their children to private schools or homeschool so that the schools don't get to an overcapacity state.

Asinine.

Yes. You have to pass CSHS to get to Consol from where we live. It's almost twice as far.

Said multiple times and no one seems to believe me, but ill say again, lots of this at least in the past was due to how bus transportation was funded. Typically there were multiple ways to get the "desired" ethnic and socioeconomic mix, but transportation chose the option.
School had to provide transportation usually bus, when you were greater than mile from the school. But of you are two miles from the school the fed reimbursed you for that spend. So if you were between one and two miles from the school they were incentives to send you to a more remote school.
My time involved with groups doing work for districts was many years ago i suspect the same or similar things drive normal people to think its crazy to drive past 2 schools, but the old rule "follow the money" explains lots of craziness.

Just moved here a few weeks ago. It may be too early to say, but I feel it may be difficult to get in with the locals. Seems super clicky.
Been here 21 years. Very few people know me and that's OK. I was a little more public-facing a couple of years ago due to my job but yeah, there's definitely circles of influence/friend groups that run with their own. I have since backed off into the shadows to do my own thing.

I find that people tend to clique with folks that they go to church with around here. I have a lot of acquaintances, and not a lot of friends, but also be prepared for a good amount of turnover in folks. The area tends to be somewhat transient.

Church can be super isolating. Christian women can be brutal but I'm trying! At least I have a friend in Jesus!

but I do like to clink beers with people too!

We're zoned to Consol but it's at least twice as far as CSHS. Luckily I have a while until mine are in HS; hopefully it changes before then.

I appreciate the replies. My wife and I are considering a move from Houston following retirement, which might be in 2 - 4 years. Right now, we're just trying to understand some options. I haven't spent much time in B/CS since graduating in 1984, just a few 2-3 day business trips over the years. Some of our priorities would be relatively clean, secure neighborhoods with good access to quality healthcare. We're both Republicans and have grown tired of Houston. It's hard to believe how quickly this city has declined in just the past 10 years.
Since I hunt and fish, I don't view a few extra hours of drive time to the coast or south Texas as an obstacle.
