If you're looking for something to do this weekend, the fall Herp reptile show is at the Expo Center this weekend, 10-5 on sat and 10-4 on sunday. Not only will there be a lot of creepy crawlies, but there will be PLANTS!

Beware there's everything from snakes to geckos to caimans, frogs, turtles, tarantulas, jumping spiders, small birds, and even more snakes... oh... yeah.. lots of cockroaches.... and even doodlebugs are now a thing with color mutations..

I'll be there with tons carnivorous plants, so come and bring your wallet...

support local!!!

My wife and I went a couple of years ago.

The people watching was incredible.

She wanted to buy a chameleon. We aren't reptile people and I don't know that we want to get into that world. Seems like a lot of money to do it right with setting up a habitat and whatnot.

But the chameleons were really cool creatures.

We went last year. It was lots of fun. But I have enough trouble boarding our cats when we travel. I don't want to have to worry about finding someone to watch a snake while I'm out of town.

Duuuuuuuuude, snakes are easy. I pet sit for friends with a freaking menagerie and the snake is the one pet I don't worry about. They feed her before they leave and she's good for 10 days or so.

As someone who used to keep reptiles, I learned as many do that they are actually pretty fussy and require a lot of specialized care. Anyone interested in getting into this needs to do a lot of research into the individual care of this or that species.

She is a boa.

We got her when class of '23 kid was 2. We looked at a ball python but it was nippy that day in the pet store, so we went with the boa.

Yes there was at least one cobra for sale this past spring and another that was already purchased before we arrived (empty cage)

Somebody had a gaboon viper for sale last time we went. Gorgeous snake but I can't imagine keeping a venomous snake as a pet.

100%.

Reptile (and amphib) care is almost completely on husbandry. Proper humidity, lighting, vitamins, food, enclosure size, etc. Some species are hardier than others for sure. Chams are way up there on the list of delicate pets.

Yes, you actually can.

It's fun. My son is obsessed with reptiles (and all animals) so we go every year. I'll be honest, reptile people are pretty ****ing weird so prepare yourself for that.

I was curious so I looked up permit requirements to own a cobra. As I understand it anyone can buy a cobra and apply for a permit for $20. You can get one anywhere hunting licenses are sold. Is that right? That seems a little…..crazy to me.

Please don't buy a cobra. They shut down the city of Austin a couple years ago when somebody lost one.

Those are cool. I had something like that I found on a pipeline installation site in the 90's. We called it a mud siren or a mud puppy.

I fed it minnows. He was cool.

need more care than your average critter... which is why we dont have one..

Plants just need sun and water.... so we stick to plants that eat things.....

They do require a lot of care, especially making sure the tank is at the proper temperature, which is pretty cool (less than 70F).
