So we got back from vacation and our A/C was not working as well as it should. We had someone come out and said we have a leak in our evaporator coil and it needs to be replace. The leak is at the bottom and cannot just be fixed.

What is the average cost to replace a 4 ton evaporator coil? Not sure if we are getting hosed or it is a good deal.

Thanks!

It's worth a call to your homeowner's insurance agent to see if you might have some coverage. We had this same thing happen to us in 2021 and I did not know we were covered, but while reviewing my renewal with my agent she mentioned it. I told her about the repair and she said "send me the info let's file a claim and see what happens". I was skeptical since it was three years ago but I'll be darned if they didn't pay the claim (less our deductible obviously.)

Our bill would have been $2600 but the coil itself was under warranty, so it was $1900. The labor and refrigerant to fill the unit back up was not. This is a Rheem unit and it was three years ago so take that into consideration - everything has gone up.

Good luck!

I sent the info to your office.

410a Rheem - attic easy access. They are including the refrigerant.

4 Ton unit.
The unit is 9 years old, but I am not the original owner, so no warranty.

We have a 1% deductible, so not going to help there.

So is $4k reasonable today considering inflation in labor and parts?

We do as well, but this was a separate rider with a $500 deducible that covered major appliances that are connected to the home. (Water heaters, A/C, etc.) Like I said, worth a call. And maybe worth adding the coverage for a few bucks a month. We have State Farm for reference.

$3600 for a 3 ton Rheem recently. Included new blower.

Thanks. That is what I was afraid. Prices are a lot higher than I thought.

Don't repair.Like everything in life, a proper install is crucial.

If not installed properly you will have severe problems with water blowing into your plenum.

9 year old unit. Time to buy a new one.

All the coils are cheap aluminum and don't last forever.

Get quotes on a new air handler.

Get a float switch installed as well. Actual switch cost is about $20. No idea on labor, but it is super easy to do.
