Taking an Uber to College Station from IAH (after 10 PM)

Instead of paying and sleeping at an airport hotel and then taking the morning Ground Shuttle to CS, I am considering taking an Uber or Lyft. Price is between $70 to $130 when I checked at different times. This seems cheap as it will take over 3 hrs if the driver needs to drive back to Houston. So I wonder if people have tried and had drivers accepted their ride request for cost under $150. TIA

Why not just drive and park at the airport?

I used to drive for Uber (and still occasionally do) to make some fun money. I did several rides to Houston and Austin and never got paid less than $100. It was always worth it to me.

We once used Uber from DFW around midnight when that notorious last flight of the day into CLL canceled. The request was rejected by about 5 drivers until one agreed. Haven't tried from IAH, but you could sure give it a try.

I did this one late night (early morning) from IAH to home. It cost about $95 and I tipped about $30.

I am driving to a different state and flying back home without my car. So, either pay for the hotel and shuttle ride or use Uber to get home early if it is not too expensive or keep getting rejected at the airport.

Good to know someone has done that, and even from DFW. Thank you, folks.

Tried this from IAH once and it is not a good idea. Back when there used to be connecting flights between IAH and College Station, my connecting flight to college station was the last one of the night and it got canceled. Tried getting an Uber and all the drivers just kept rejecting the ride. Ended up renting a car from Enterprise, driving to college station, and dropping the rental off at college station airport the next day. Pretty sure it was cheaper than Uber would have been too. I've had coworkers do the same when connecting flights from Dallas get canceled. There's a chance you might get someone to accept the ride but I sure wouldn't count on it.

When i opened a branch of a ny company we usually had a crew scheduled on the over booked often cancelled flight on aa out of dallas on Friday. The office always booked a Lincoln town car on Enterprise for dropoff in cs. If everyone got on the plane they cancelled it. But did not cancel often, and if there were seats open they offered to take any others stranded home.
My son has taken ubers many times on multi hour trips in the NE us when the railroad was using him to reposition vehicles and equipment. Can take awhile to find someone that wants an 8hr fair but they do exist

You don't happen to work tamu do you? If so do a one way with enterprise. No drop fees.

Just find somebody on this board and avoid Uber.

I've done this a bunch of times, though. Admittedly it's been a couple years. When you request the Uber, expect to get a few rejections as it is a really long trip. Car

Our niece did this last year when she visited us from New York. She said there weren't any issues with getting someone to pick her up on either leg of the trip.

Thank you all for your comments/suggestions. I completed my Lyft ride last night. The very first Lyft driver accepted the ride request (for $109)--very lucky. I tipped 25%, so the total cost is still under the $150 I was willing to spend (vs hotel and then ground shuttle in the morning).

I did check the cost of a one-way rental from Enterprise. Since I am not affiliated with A&M, it would have cost me about $140 and I have to drive and spend money on gas.

Glad it worked out.
Probably way more convenient than a rental too.

Enterprise has apparently stopped doing one way rentals, at least for the TAMU affiliate program. My fiance and I looked into it (CS to Austin), but it wouldn't let us use that as an option.

Not true. Business rentals through tamu contract can still do one way.

That is interesting to know. My wife and I almost did this, but changed our minds recently... Now, I know it wouldn't have worked anyway... Thanks for the info

I frequently rent one-way cars from Easterwood Airport to IAH and from IAH back to College Station. I usually use Enterprise.

We booked a car on the state rate from CLL to IAH on way in the last month.

I'm sort of surprised an Uber driver would go from Houston to CS if they didn't have a trip that would take them back to HOU.

So am I. I don't know how much of the fee the driver gets, but if they get 1/2 of the $100 that's $50 and add the $30 tip for a total of $80. Most would have a per mile cost of at least 50 cents. So for the 180 mile round trip you have a transportation cost of $90. So you aren't making any money.

Maybe they picked up a rider from IAH going north or west on,their way back to CS

I bet some of them have friends/family in the area. Driving here might even be worth the loss and they get some spending money.
