Hi all. I scan a lot of lost/found pets in BCS for microchips. Tags (with your phone number) and microchips are an easy way to ensure that your pet makes it home in the event that it gets lost. Lots of people don't see the need until their pet gets lost. It happens to the best of us. From my experience around 30% of pets have chips. Some that have chips are not registered at all, or the owners information is not current.

If you know your pets chip number go to [url=https://www.aaha.org/your-pet/pet-microchip-lookup/microchip-search/][/url]https://www.aaha.org/your-pet/pet-microchip-lookup/microchip-search/ and search. The search will tell you if/what company the chip is registered to. (Home again, AVID, 24 pet watch etc). Call the company and check to see if your contact information is current. Beware of the up-sell. From my experience, they can charge a reasonable fee to update the info but some try to sell insurance, lifetime updates, storing your pets medical information etc. Some will imply that your pet is not protected. There should be no recurring fee required.

+1 on this. I mean, it's $30ish. Why vets don't require it I will never understand. Just make it part of the vaccination protocol.

I go to the vet for a certain procedure, to get vaccinations etc. why should I be required to pay for something I don't want? Seems similar to people wanting to require Covid shots. What ever happened to personal choice and freedom?

You are aware that most counties require vaccination and registration right? Do you question freedom on those as well or did you just want to let everyone know your stance on covid vaccines?

I have a lot to say in response to you but first, please explain why you "don't want" to pay a nominal fee so that, in the event that your (I hope) beloved pet is lost, you would not want to make it easier for whoever finds it can get it back to you as soon as possible.

BCStalk, I just stated that I take mine in for vaccinations. Far as I know there is no law or mandate requiring microchips.
Tailgate, you don't know if my animals are chipped are not. I can tell you they have some kind of ID on them. Let me ask you, who gets to decide what is a nominal fee or mandate for the rest of us?

Here's another idea. Let your pet loose and maybe someone will find it before it gets killed, and will take it to the Aggieland Humane Society. They'll spay/ neuter and microchip your pet for you. And if you wait long enough to retrieve it, you might get lucky and get it back on a "free weekend". There! I saved you $30.

If you think Tailgate88 is a big proponent of government regulation, you are confused.

The only vaccine requirement is for rabies. A high morality disease in humans and animals. Should the government require spaying/neutering, grooming, flea/heart worm prevention? I know nothing about tailgate or his politics nor am I confused

I think we recently paid $12 for ours as part of an appt for something else

Also, good time to verify and update microchip registry if your critters are already chipped.
Yesterday we were able to return a dog 20 miles from home.... chip was registered.
Shocking how many are chipped and not registered or info obsolete.
